Lukashenko’s opponent, former chairman of the Belgazprombank board, decided not to register the Central Election Commission.
On Tuesday, everything happened very fast. The commission’s president, Lidija Yermošina, proposed not to register V. Babaryka as a presidential candidate, and the members of the commission soon unanimously supported this proposal.
The reason is that V. Babaryka’s income and real estate statement and the involvement of a “foreign organization” in the election campaign are unclear.
L. Jermošina also read a letter from the State Audit Office, which states that V. Babaryka allegedly led a criminal group that “laundered money.”

Babaryka and her son Eduard were arrested almost a month ago. Even then, the head of the State Audit Office, Ivan Tertelis, explained that V. Babaryka “was the direct organizer and leader of the illegal activities.”
According to I. Tertelis, Belgazprombank, previously led by V. Babaryka, is involved in illegal operations of the Latvian bank ABLV. A search was conducted at the former banker’s house and the temporary external management of Belgazprombank was introduced.
Two weeks later, it became clear what Viktor and Eduard Babaryka were specifically accused of. According to the schedule of cases announced by the Minsk City Court, V. Babaryka is accused of money laundering, tax evasion and bribery. E.Babaryka is imposed only for tax evasion.
Amnesty International has already recognized Babaryk and popular blogger Sergei Tikhanyovsky, who is also being held behind bars. The persecution of other activists whom the Lukashenko regime considers opponents is also condemned.
