After CSKA Moscow officially confirmed the attraction of Tornike Shengelia, that message did not lose sight of Sakartwell President Salome Zurabishvili.
The 68-year-old head of the country drew attention to the particularly strained political relations between Russia and Sacartwell, addressed a message to a basketball star on Facebook and criticized her.
“I am sad,” Zurabishvili began. “As president of Sakartwell, that decision to move to CSKA Moscow is unacceptable to me.”
The basketball player himself said he did not value his transition.
“I am not going to make excuses,” Schengen stressed. – I’m going to play basketball, which won’t change my relationship with Sakartwell. I hope that doesn’t change people’s attitude towards me either. “
The Sakartwell Basketball Federation, which sided with the player, soon reacted to the erupting policy.
“The federation is convinced that, as before, Tornikė will continue to defend the honor and interests of his country and national team, regardless of the club his career is aimed at,” the report said. “The national team captain will once again delight us with his personal success, and his leadership will help the national team achieve many great victories.”
Political disagreements between Russia and Sacartwell erupted in 2008, when the Russians captured the lands of South Ossetia and Abkhazia during the war. These territories were recognized by Russia as independent and continued to have military ammunition.
Representing Baskonia in Vitoria for the past six years, Schengen recently led the team to victory in Spain and tied the future to CSKA until 2023.
