Crowds of people protested in the city center and protested against the government’s crisis management. Serbia is experiencing an increase in new cases of COVID-19. Two months ago, the country lifted the quarantine restrictions imposed in March.
During the protests, a clash broke out between police officers and a group of protesters who stormed the parliament building. The police drove away the protesters with tear gas.
Protesters also threw stones at police officers and urged President Alexander Vučičius to resign.
A. Vučičius announced the introduction of a 24-hour curfew for the weekend. Serbia has recently had the highest number of COVID-19 deaths per day at 13.
Critics accuse the president of rushing to lift the quarantine restrictions ahead of the June 21 national elections in which his party secured victory.
Before the elections, there were almost no quarantine restrictions, and thousands of Serbs watched the sporting event.
