Mongolia quarantined its western region near the Russian border when two possible cases of bubonic plague were identified after eating whistle meat, according to The Moscow Times.
The Mongolian Zoonotic Disease Center reported that laboratory tests confirmed that two unidentified people had contracted a “whistle infestation” in the Chovd region.
The center said that it had therefore decided to introduce quarantine in and around the city of Chovdo, 500 km south of the Russian republics of Tuva and Altai. So far, vehicles are not allowed in the region.
The Center for Zoonotic Diseases said they had already examined samples from 146 people who had had contact with the infected and identified at least 504 more people who had had secondary contact. Local media reports that the plague victims were a 27-year-old man and a young woman of unknown age.
Mongolia had previously closed the main border section with Russia in 2019. in May, speculating that this was where the plague could have entered the country. Then the husband and wife died from the meat of the whistle.
