It is planned to approve a new procedure for the transport of passengers and luggage in buses and taxis in the port city. Buses are promised to allow the transportation of animals and vehicles such as scooters.
Vytautas Paukštė, Chief Specialist of the Transport Department of the Port City Municipality, explained that the procedure in force so far had to be adjusted due to changes in national legal acts and the Lithuanian Road Transport Code.
“In order to promote greater use of green vehicles, in this draft decision we propose to allow the transport of scooters, skates, skateboards and other micro-mobility vehicles on public transport,” taught V. Paukštė.
After evaluation of dimensions, it is proposed to allow bicycles to be carried only by suburban buses when they are or are equipped to carry such vehicles. Passengers who wish to transport the bicycle by bus are expected to be the last to board the bus.
Buses adapted for bicycles will be marked on the signs.
“We also offer to transport animals by public transport in specially adapted containers and small animals on the hands, as well as guide dogs for the visually impaired, in addition to allowing the transport of liquids in special containers adapted for drinks and sealed,” said V.Paukštė Possible changes.
The topic was recently discussed by members of the city’s Finance and Economy Committee. Politicians blessed the proposed changes, but stopped at a couple of points.
The members of the committee were questioned about the fact that the regulations prohibit the transport of hand luggage with a total dimension greater than 180 cm. Politicians wanted the rules to remove the ban and allow such luggage to be carried at an additional cost.
The rules also include a ban on carrying firearms.
“People have firearms that get a license to carry them legally. And you can’t get on a bus with that weapon?” Committee member Arvydas Vaitkus asked.
It is explained that this prohibition has been in force before, but no complaints have been received in this regard.
However, politicians have called for the ban on carrying firearms to be removed from the rules.
The final decision on the rules must be made by the city council.
