On July 3, in response to information in the public domain about serious environmental violations identified on the D-6 oil platform on the Baltic continental shelf, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania delivered a note verbale to the Federation Embassy of Russia in Vilnius.
The note expresses deep concern about the environmental violations identified on the D-6 oil platform by the Russian state agency for natural resources, Rosprirodnadzor. He was also asked to provide detailed information and an explanation of Rosprirodnadzor’s investigation and possible environmental incidents on the platform that could have caused damage to the Baltic Sea and its coastal ecosystems.
In the Baltic Sea in 2004 The D-6 (or Kravcovskaya) oil production platform, built and commissioned in 2006, is located on the Russian continental shelf, 5 km from the Lithuanian-Russian state border and 22, 5 km from Curonian Spit, listed by UNESCO. The issue of the proper functioning of the platform is extremely important for Lithuania due to the consequences and damages that could occur in the event of an ecological accident if it is not operated correctly.
