From now on, FK Panevėžys will be trained by Joao Martins. A contract was signed with a 53-year-old soccer specialist from Portugal until the end of this season.
J. Martins knows Lithuanian football well: the coach worked for several years on the Kaunas Stumbras coaching staff. Last season, the Kaunas team, coached by the Portuguese, even led league A at the same time, despite the club being in financial difficulties. In March of last year, Martins was voted the best coach in the A League.
J. Martins has played for ten seasons at the Madeira Maritime Club during his career as a professional footballer, he was the team captain. At this club he began his journey as a coach: initially he trained the academy teams, and then he became a member of the headquarters of the coaches of the main team. Since 2009, Mr. Martins has gained experience as a coach abroad and has worked in top league clubs in Cyprus, Angola and Saudi Arabia.
Since 2016, he has been staying in Lithuania and was a staff member of the Kaunas Stumbras coaches. In the Kaunas team, the coach played an important role in the education of young players, who then complemented the famous Portuguese and French clubs.
From July last year until the end of the season, J. Martins worked at the Žalgiris Club in Vilnius, replacing Marek Zuba, a Pole who had led the team in the capital until then.
While working as a coach on the Stumbras team, J. Martins had to train current Panevėžys footballers, Rafael Broett, Lukas Čerkauskas, Matheus Bissis and Rafael Floro.
