On Friday, M. Sinkevičius informed the council of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) that he was withdrawing from the electoral list, in which he entered the third number.
“I appreciate the confidence shown by the party’s friends and the president, the list of candidates was compiled on the basis of their opinion, therefore that evaluation means a lot to me personally,” says M. Sinkevičius in a letter to the council of the match.
“However, I must admit that the positions of both the mayor of Jonava and the president of the Association of Municipalities of Lithuania are very important to me, I think that in recent years we have come a long way,” says the mayor of Jonava.
For these reasons, he says he has decided not to participate in the elections and to remain mayor and president of the Association of Municipalities.
M. Sinkevičius’s participation in the Seimas elections was not supported by the Jonava branch of the LSDP headed by him.
The Jonava branch council of the LSDP decided that consistency was important, so it would be inappropriate to step down as mayor one year after the municipal council elections.
The council of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party announced this week that it had approved the list of candidates for the Seimas, led by the party’s president, Gintautas Paluckas. Jonava Mayor M. Sinkevičius entered with the third number.
