The piqueteros created posters: “We want a brave president”, “President, keep your promises”, “Don’t be afraid of the rainbow”, “Gay men too”. The initiators sent a badge to the president by mail.

According to Tomás Vytautas Raskevičius, one of the organizers of the campaign, during the campaign, President Gitan Nausėda remembers the promise made during the electoral campaign to put on a rainbow badge.

“Throughout June, we urge the President to remember the promise and put on a rainbow badge. The President made this promise during last year’s election campaign, when he ran for this position,” said T. V. Raskevičius.

June is celebrated worldwide as LGBT Equality Month. On this occasion, the LGBT community in Lithuania recalled the promise made during the 2019 election campaign by President G. Nausėda to wear a rainbow badge.

“It is a great opportunity to show solidarity with this social group. Despite the calls of some politicians, creators of public opinion, the president has not kept his promise. This is today that we are carrying out a symbolic campaign and once again and finally claiming a rainbow-colored badge.

We want to point out that the badge is just a symbol: it is not the main problem for LGBT people, to make it clear that our politicians understand that this group exists and that we can make some legal changes after that, ”said T. V. Raskevičius.

The interlocutor recalled that the President previously mentioned that he was expecting natural circumstances: “I believe that natural circumstances exist every day because LGBT people are Lithuanian citizens, face discrimination and social exclusion and need the help of our President.”

LGBT marches are scheduled for November 11. Attendees believe this will be another opportunity to remind the President of his electoral promise.

Participants explained that the July 4 picket is unrelated to the upcoming elections: “LGBT issues are incredibly important to me and it is just a coincidence that I am also a candidate for the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania on the rights platform LGBT humans, “said TV Raskevičius.

Picket participants expressed their opinions:

I am here because I support all people, regardless of their views or race. This year there was no parade and all June was dedicated to the LGBT community, unfortunately we did not receive the insignia affixed by the President.

I came to support the LGBT community because political leaders would like more responsibility for their words, a modern approach. Pretending that there is no problem, that people are not discriminated against, that the laws are as equal for them as for other people.

During the election campaign, when there were two participants left, they both mentioned talking about LGBT rights to wear the badge. It is time for our country and state to understand that no matter what your sexual orientation is, people are equal and need support. Who else but the President of the Republic?

Lithuania is one of the few EU countries where same-sex marriage and couples are not legalized. These LGBT citizens are like second-class people. Legally, your rights are not guaranteed.
