The club’s official announcement states that the separation was agreed by consensus.
The decision was made after a fiasco in the final of the Spanish championship, where the Catalans lost to Vitoria Baskonia’s team 67:69 on Tuesday and ran out of trophies.
Without success, Pešičius’s students also had a King’s Cup tournament, and their performance in the Euroleague was interrupted by the coronavirus crisis.
The 70-year-old Serbian has been working in Barcelona since 2018, before which he held the position in 2002-2004.
The decision of the Barcelona leadership brings intrigue to the Šarūnas Jasikevičius dilemma. In recent days, Kaunas’ helmsman “Žalgiris” is negotiating with “Fenerbahche” (Turkey) from Istanbul, where he would replace his master Željko Obradovičius.
However, the mutual sympathy of the Catalan capital and its former golden boy from Lithuania can turn events in a new direction.
It’s true, Š. Jasikevičius has partnered with Barcelona more than once under the leadership of S. Pešičis, but rumors have not been confirmed.
We recall that, according to unofficial data, Barcelona had the largest Euroleague budget this season, which amounted to 41 million. euros

S. Pešičius, quoted in the club’s report, said he had decided to resign even before the last ACB league tournament in Valencia.
“My work here is done, it is time to let someone else assume these responsibilities.” I am proud of what I have achieved and I will always stay with Barça’s services, “said the basketball veteran.
But even on the eve, after the lost final, he spoke completely differently, alluding to plans for the upcoming season.
“This team has continuity, a future, a character and everything to win titles. But in basketball, you play five against the other team. We lost the game we wanted to win. We are frustrated and sad, but it is a team effort. We can play better, I am sure that next season we will take a big step forward and win titles, ”said S. Pešičius at the press conference after the game.
During the second stage of his career in Barcelona, the Serbian won two Copa del Rey trophies, in 2018 and 2019.
In total, he led the Catalans in 322 official matches and achieved 235 victories.
