The change in the team of President Gitanas Nausėda is considered by some experts as a natural phenomenon, which is not exclusive to the Presidency of this period. Summer time is said to be the right time to recalibrate the equipment.
Others note that last week, the leak of information that the President’s first adviser on national security, the former commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, General V. J. Žukas, was resigning, caused some confusion. However, most commentators agreed that it was not worth dramatizing the situation. However, not everyone thinks that.
What a lie
On June 27, the article “G. Nausėda sweeps the shots of V. Landsbergis, one of them, the” General “V. Žukas, responsible for the” golden spoons “bought by the army, does not allow to doubt the course of events and consumes more false statements.
“It appears that the presidency is being freed from the staff of Lithuanian ‘patriarch’ Vytautas Landsbergis. This week it was announced that the senior adviser to President G. Nausėda, former commander of the Armed Forces Jonas Žukas, is leaving his post. By the way, he is extremely Ironic how this historian Jonas Žukas became a general: a few months of internship in Germany was enough for that, and the graduate historian became the Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, “the article says.
The title of the article suggests that General V. J. Žukas has been fired, although this is not true: the first reports on the resignation of the National Security Adviser affirm that he will resign voluntarily to the presidency. The President himself or his representatives did not mention anywhere that V. Žukas is fired or, in other words, “cleansed” from him.
The claim that V. J. Žukas is a “framework” of Vytautas Landsbergis is based on indirect and unproven links. Lina Jazgevičienė, the wife of Andrius Jazgevičius, the head of the company Nota bene, who constantly wins public contracts, works as the principal of the Queen Martha School of the company Austėja Landsbergienė, the wife of the President of TS-LKD. “Nota Bene” is mentioned in an article on laisvaslaikrastis.lt, which recalls the scandalous story of “golden spoons”.
The so-called gold spoons scandal erupted when the Public Procurement Office announced in August 2016 that the Army had purchased several Nota Bene cookware eight times more than on the market. According to the VPT, the Lithuanian Armed Forces, in the fall of 2014, carried out 173.8 thousand. The cutting board was bought for 180 euros, while an identical table costs 28 euros in the store at the time, and a bread knife costs 142 euros, and the price in the store is 13 euros.
He bought a steak fork for 184 euros, a colander for 70 euros, a sharpener for 103 euros, a meat grinder knife for 250 euros. The sieve was purchased for 161 euros, spoons of different sizes for 243 euros and 258 euros.
In 2015, the military police launched an investigation prior to possible fraud, and in 2016, on behalf of the Attorney General’s Office, the investigation was transferred to the Special Investigation Service. Finally, the Vilnius City District Court awarded Andrius Jazgevičius, the former head of Nota Bene, 7,000 LTL in the “golden spoons” case. a fine of euros.
According to the prosecution, the accused pleaded guilty and sincerely regretted it. Questioned, he said that he had committed criminal acts to comply with public procurement requirements. He did not inform the company’s shareholders or other employees that he had branded kitchen utensils purchased from a third party with a foreign brand and presented them to the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
V. J. Žukas was appointed Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in July 2014, but was not directly responsible for these acquisitions. At the time of the scandalous purchases, Lieutenant Colonel Valdas Dambrauskas, head of the department of material resources, was responsible for them.
He confirmed that he was the punished officer mentioned by the army commander. However, V. Dambrauskas assured that he had been replaced, because the head of the Department of Material Resources is only a formal approver.
According to him, the fully equipped kitchen equipment was also purchased in 2002. from the same company – “Nota bene”, but there was no doubt. After more than a decade, during which kitchen equipment was not renewed, a new acquisition is planned, which took place in 2014.
He assured that he only saw prices in 2015, when an internal investigation began. According to V. Dambrauskas, things like the price must be verified by the managers who send the lists to the director.
“The Outdoor Equipment Division of the Department of Material Resources, whose then chief, Major Povilas Ivanovas, wrote everything. And I didn’t check everything, it’s his job. I only take a general look at the value of the contract, the items to buy. If I go through everything from light bulbs and springs to clothing and hundreds of other purchases, it may take a few days for a contract. I’m sure the regulations say: managers are responsible for the information provided, they had to pay attention and warn me what the price was. This is their lack of responsibility. After all, the Minister of National Defense or the Commander of the Armed Forces does not verify everything that is presented to them. Imagine submitting a 39-page document to an army chief, and there are some lines you don’t notice, isn’t the army chief in charge? After all, the Logistics Board provided him with that list, ”argued the officer.
A false statement is also made, in which it is observed that “by education, the historian Jonas Žukas became a general; a few months of internship in Germany were sufficient for that, and thus the graduate historian became the Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. “
In addition to the fact that there is no “Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces”, there is only the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces or the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (President or President), such statements are a version distorted vj
V. J. Žukas actually acquired the education of a historian at the University of Vilnius in 1985-1991. However, he did not spend “a few months internship” at the German Bundeswehr Leadership Academy, but two years from 1992 to 1994.
Also, after completing these courses, he did not become an Army Commander: in 1994 he was only a Lieutenant Colonel and served as the Deputy Director of Staff for the Iron Wolf Brigade. V. J. Žukas received the title of Brigadier General in 2007, Major General in 2010, and was appointed Commander of the Armed Forces only a decade later, in 2014. A year later, he was awarded the highest rank, Lieutenant General.
