A building on Kone Street that represents a constant danger to traffic participants on Naujoji Uosto str. 5 is likely to remain until it collapses on its own as it is recognized as an urban value. At least it’s gratifying that now it’s been decided to make a safe path for pedestrians around this house. However, the fundamental question of the building’s future remains unresolved.
With maritime heritage brand
For several years, the building covered with a green safety net on Naujoji Uosto Street, which stands out on the roadway, has been in a state of emergency.
The house has not been inhabited for several years. The municipality had long been ready to demolish it, but this was disputed by heritage conservationists.
After a series of courts between the Klaipėda Municipality and the Department of Cultural Heritage, the abandoned building was recognized as an element of the urban structure.
It was decided to preserve the location and volume of the building.
This is 1883. The brick house of the Klaipeda Royal Port Construction Board was built in 2006, part of the Works Port complex.
1923-1940 The first board of the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda operated there, the most famous marine engineers and administrators L.Hagen, G.Borchert, R.Visockas, J.Šimoliūnas, L. Stulpinas worked and lived there.
Paradoxically, this pathetically abandoned object was somewhere marked with a maritime heritage mark, marking objects related to maritime heritage: buildings and sites of ancient buildings, piers, roads, ships, and more.
The aim is to emphasize Klaipeda’s uniqueness as a maritime city, while highlighting the face of Lithuania as a maritime state.
There is no final solution
Vitalijus Juška, Head of the Klaipėda Municipality Heritage Protection Department, admitted that after the end of the courts, the municipalities are not satisfied with the status quo regarding this house.
However, if you decide to do something with this building: demolish or renovate it, it should be re-evaluated.
“In this case, the municipality has not decided that the house should be demolished. The building has its owners, as far as we have contacted them, they also have no clear provisions. So far, the building cannot be demolished, but it has not been has decided to preserve it. ” After three years of litigation, it can be said that there is no final decision “, – regretted V.Juška.
What to do now should be agreed between the building owners and the supervisory authorities.
“As for the condition of that house, the situation is sad and dangerous. I myself went and saw that the roofs were rotten, the openings in the ceiling were plastered, the plaster was falling, the condition was very poor, although there are some Valuable items in that building, both the vaulted basement and its “The floor covering is authentic and in fairly good repair. It is a pity that nobody needs the building. If it had been necessary, they would have found a way to use it a long time ago, “said V. Juška.
People will feel more comfortable
Until the situation regarding the building at Naujoji Uosto Street 5 is still unclear, to protect pedestrians, it was decided to install a bypass around the building on the other side, demolishing the fences and installing a temporary sidewalk behind the house.
Because right now, some pedestrians are trying to avoid the building in the driveway, only the most cautious return to the intersection and head across the street.
The fence was to be demolished immediately after St. John’s Day. Soon after, the municipality will build a temporary sidewalk behind the building, using materials left over from the reconstruction of other facilities.
The new path will avoid the building and return to Naujoji Uosto Street to continue the journey on the sidewalk.
This is said to solve two problems: connecting people will be much more convenient and secure, and at the same time there will be no need to dismantle the building.
However, this decision is also temporary, as it is again unclear what the fate of this building will ultimately be.
