A drunk Vilnius resident who tried to ride in a friend’s car who fell asleep at home: alcohol darkens my mind

A resident of the home who noticed the drunk driver called police officers. Upon arrival, Donat M. finally moved out of the place and damaged several cars in the eyes of the officers.

In court, the man pleaded guilty and claimed that drinking alcohol darkened his mind. He couldn’t explain his actions from picking up the key to trying to drive.

The friend did not speak for half a year.

The event was registered in 2021. April 13, at approximately 4.30 p.m., in Vilnius. While drunk, a Vilnius resident was driving a Škoda Superb. When tested with an alcohol tester, the degree of intoxication was 2.15 per thousand.

In court, Donatas M. pleaded completely guilty. Said he was intoxicated the day before drinking at night. He added that he doesn’t remember much. He said he met an old friend and someone else.

The man said he knew the car he was driving belonged to a friend. He saw him come home with him in this car. Donatas M. admitted that drinking alcohol darkened her mind, so she couldn’t explain what happened.

The court considered that he might have wanted to drive the car to the door. When he picked up the car keys, his friend was asleep. The Vilnius resident said it was good that someone called the police because they did not understand what they were doing.

He added that in this way he was stopped from the most painful consequences. According to Donato M., his friend was very angry with him for doing it. They met only half a year later, but a friend didn’t want to talk to him.

Donatas M. claimed that he does not consume alcohol on a daily basis, he tried to code, to be treated. A man was treated for alcohol addiction about 5 years ago. But that night he drank vodka before driving.

The drunk driver recalled that as soon as he got out of the parking lot and started driving, he saw the police car, who turned on the audible and visual signals. The man freaked out for them, he suddenly hit the brakes and loaded the car. Then he collided with another car.

The owner of the car told the court that he had visited a friend that day. He drank a few bottles of beer at home with him because he was after work, decided to smell, regain strength.

That a friend took his car, he found out the next day from the neighbors. The car stayed in the parking lot near the house. Why a friend took his car keys, the man could not imagine, so he could not specify.

Suspicious behaviors

During the pre-trial investigation, a resident of the home testified that he parked his car near the home when he returned from work. Then he went home and noticed that a man was holding the car keys in his hand and trying to open all the cars.

The man looked very drunk. When the suspect managed to unlock the silver Škoda car, he sat inside. He sat down, started the car, and tried to drive, but still couldn’t because the car kept going down.

The witness then approached the man, opened the door, and told him to get out and go home. When he approached the man, he felt a strong smell of alcohol emanating from him. But that man did not listen to him, he continued sitting in the car.

The witness said he saw the man get out of the car from time to time and sit back down. He then called the general emergency number 112 and called the police officers.

When the police officers arrived, the man with the described car began driving in front of them. Damaged several cars while driving. Police officers stopped the car and detained its driver.

Will pay several thousand

The court ruled that Donat M. was guilty of drunk driving. The fine of 2,550 euros that was imposed on him was immediately reduced by a third (due to the total admission of guilt), to 1.7 thousand. euros.

A drunk sitting behind the wheel is also banned from driving for a year and 6 months.

An amount of EUR 2,780 will also be recovered. His friend’s car, the Škoda Superb, was highly rated.

The judgment can be appealed to the Vilnius Regional Court within 20 days from the date of its publication, by filing an appeal with the Vilnius City District Court.
