Rimantas Kėvalas, director of the Children’s Disease Clinic, told LNK News on Friday that a seriously ill newborn is being treated in the intensive care unit.
According to the doctor, a third of children admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 are admitted to the intensive care unit.

Children are getting tougher
Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases dr. Inga Ivaškevičienė said that young patients are finding it more and more difficult for COVID-19, even children who depend on oxygen show up. “Such a situation did not really exist with us during the period of the pandemic.
This is worrying, in fact, because there are especially seriously ill children ”, lamented the doctor. According to her, infectious diseases have patterns. Therefore, the number of patients is likely to increase. The ages of children treated at Santara clinics vary greatly. It ranges from newborns to almost adults.
However, it is teenagers who are getting sick right now. According to I.Ivaškevičienė, children make up a small part of severe COVID-19 patients.
“It just came to our knowledge then. This is somewhat different than it was before (…) Currently there are 8 children in the hospital, but this number is constantly changing,” said the doctor, adding that the general trend shows that the number children needing medical attention help is increasing.
All the children who needed medical help at the Santara clinics were not vaccinated. Although some may have already done so.
According to I.Ivaškevičienė, a child is currently being treated for resuscitation. Also, minors suffer from COVID-19 differently.
“Children have their own disease. But those clinical signs are very diverse and there is not one that we can take as a gold standard. There may be upper respiratory symptoms. There may be gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, nausea, the spectrum is very broad. Sure, this cluster of symptoms is usually accompanied by fever, but it can also be very varied. Some children have a very persistent fever – high temperature, while others only 37 and some parts, “said the doctor.
Children suffer from post-epidemic conditions
I.Ivaškevičienė noted that children also suffer from post-epidemic conditions. The most dangerous is multisystemic inflammation of organs, which occurs exclusively in children.
It also happens that the child is easily infected with the coronavirus without even realizing it, and such a condition develops only after a few weeks.
“Then it would seem that an infectious disease is not complicated at all, but suddenly it provokes such an inadequate response from the body. The danger is that 80 percent. these children are treated in the intensive care unit ”, warned the doctor.
According to her, these cases of more serious diseases alone are not small. There are at least two in a month in Vilnius alone.
