In Kaunas, the last chance to say goodbye to prominent photographer Romualdas Rakauskas

The family asked in advance not to bring flowers to the farewell, and the desired sacrifice could serve to order the grave of the deceased and give meaning to their work.

R. Rakauskas, winner of the National Prize for Culture and Art, passed away on September 15 at the age of 81. The artist has suffered from a serious illness for several years that forces him to abandon the activities that made him famous.

R.Rakauskas was born in 1941 in Akmenė. He studied journalism at Vilnius University, worked in the publications “Literature and Art”, “Our Nature”, in 1967-2004 he was director and editor of the Department of Illustration of the cultural magazine “Nemunas”.

During the Soviet years, Nemunas magazine was famous for its unique and extremely bold projects, which were not found in any other publication.

R.Rakauskas organized more than 70 solo exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. Kaunas was famous for its “Flowering” photography cycle (1974-1984). For a decade, the artist traveled through Lithuania, observing the spring flowering that began at different times in different parts of the country.

The photography virtuoso also captured images of the streets, architecture and nature of Vilnius and Kaunas.

R.Rakauskas was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Gediminas for his work.

On September 20, at 2:00 p.m., the urn with the remains will be transferred to the Petrašiūnai Cemetery.
