Some require inspection from the age of 45.
It seems that many women in Lithuania are already used to cervical and breast cancer screening. According to the doctor, it would be difficult to say whether men are better screened for prostate cancer than women for cervical and breast cancer. However, GPs should offer all men between the ages of 50 and 69 to participate in a screening program and perform a prostate-specific antigen test.
This study allows at least a preliminary decision as to whether a man should be referred for consultation with an oncologist. If at least one relative in the patient’s environment has had prostate cancer, the program applies from 45 years of age.
“Anyway, it’s human to see doctors only when something hurts or something goes wrong. But primary prostate cancer does not show any specific symptoms. Often men may start to feel only an enlarged prostate, which happens to most men at some point in their lives. So the man urinates harder and harder, goes to the bathroom more often, but these are not specific symptoms of prostate cancer, ”said Dr. A. Čekauskas.
In Europe, about half a million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is the most common cancer disease among men.
According to the doctor’s urologist, a man is often brought to the doctor’s office to be examined for prostate cancer. The interlocutor of the program is reassuring: it is a completely painless test, you only need to take a blood sample.
A healthy lifestyle and prevention will help protect you
One of the risk factors is age. Unfortunately, nothing can change it. However, there are other risk factors that can be reduced. Physical activity, weight maintenance, and a healthy diet will help protect against disease.

“There is no miracle cure for protection. But a balanced diet, avoiding being overweight, avoiding diabetes, reducing the consumption of red meat can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer in the future ”, said Dr. A. Čekauskas.
The doctor was also asked the question: Can more frequent sex really help prevent prostate cancer?
“There are several studies of this type that show that having sex a little more frequently has a potentially reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. But these are not very large clinical studies and more research would be needed to prove it. These people are affected by very different factors and it is not so easy to distinguish one factor ”, said the urologist.

Depending on the interlocutor, the man may feel pain at the site of the prostate, urination may stop, and bone pain may occur. However, in this case, the prostate cancer will already be in an advanced stage.
Therefore, men should be contacted immediately as soon as they feel minor symptoms such as urinary incontinence, more frequent toilet training, sexual dysfunction.
Prostate treatments evolve almost daily, and one of them is simply observation.
“If we detect a low-risk tumor, now we can monitor it with various methods, magnetic resonance imaging, we can apply a biopsy. We also have laparoscopic surgery at Santara clinics, which ensures a more precise view of the structures. If the tumor has spread, a whole team of doctors is involved. We hope that robotic surgery will come soon, “said Dr. A. Čekauskas.
