The election of the president of the Liberal Movement, which took place on Thursday, ended in a party congress held in Trakai on Saturday. 670 Liberals out of 854 voters voted for V.Čmilytė-Nielsen and 184 for his deputy A.Bagdon.

Liberals chose Trakai for Congress not by accident: the mayoral elections will be held here on October 10. They are preparing after Edita Rudelienė, former mayor of Trakai district, became a member of the Seimas following the death of MP Kęstutis Glaveckas in April.

Andrius Šatevičius, head of the municipal administration of the Trakai district, is now running for this position. He will also have to compete for the position of mayor with Jaroslav Narkevich, a former Minister of Transport and Communications appointed by the Union of Christian Families for the Polish election campaign.

Perhaps that is why Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, who attended the congress to welcome the Liberal Movement, ironic that the current government would receive less criticism if it devoted itself to chops and roads.

In this way, I. Šimonytė indirectly bribed the previous government and one of its ministers J.Narkevičius, who had to explain about the chops eaten in Abu Dhabi and the asphalt road leading to Saulius Skvernelis’s house.

I.Šimonytė, who did not escape the bad weather and came to greet the coalition partners, received much applause. Aušrinė Armonaitė, the leader of the Freedom Party, was received with much more restraint.

A former Liberal Movement activist left the test party in a political corruption case before the Vilnius mayoral elections. The current Minister of Economy and Innovation recalled that both parties that came to power after the Seimas elections belong to the family of European liberal parties. “As in all families, there is everything: there is love, there is divorce,” said the former liberal, who thanked V. Čmilyte-Nielsen both for the friendship that survived and for the leadership.

Against the backdrop of Trakai Castle, the Liberal Movement Congress, which began outdoors on Saturday, was accompanied by extremely unfavorable weather – rain and wind. As a result, the previously prepared stage of the event collapsed: the performance of the invited musicians had to be canceled.

A.Armonaitė compared the weather conditions in Trakai on Saturday with the current government’s tests. “But I want to call not to be mistaken, not to think that criticism of the handling of the pandemic, of the vaccines that are arriving from several angry people, is the political voice of the nation. This is a criticism from several angry people, they have that right. But various angry people cannot dictate decisions in the state, especially when there are such complicated and imperfect circumstances, ”the minister said in Trakai.

I.Šimonytė joked that due to the weather conditions he feels that he is attending a conservative convention: “Everything seems to be in accordance with the best rule of Andrius Kubilius, that the best roads are not ours.”

V.Čmilytė-Nielsen’s observation that she is very happy to meet the party members live after a long time was accompanied by laughter from the Liberals, who were ripped apart by the wind and rain. “Small trials in the rain and wind will only toughen us up. I hope that the trials we have had today will end soon,” said the president of Seimas.

V. Čmilytė-Nielsen became the leader of the Liberal Movement when the party was in opposition and did not skimp on criticism from the previous government, which was later reprimanded for managing the pandemic.

Later, the news portal lrytas.lt When asked if it was easier to lead the party in opposition or in power, V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, reelected president of the Liberal Movement, said the difference was obvious.

“I had to be in various positions for a short time – I was the leader of the opposition, now I’m on the other side.” I think it’s kind of an illusion to think that one day you can be in power, have responsibilities and hope that times are just bright.

For this reason, I am very calm with the current situation, although I understand that the Government has a very heavy burden when it comes to making the best possible decisions, although of course there are no ideals, ”acknowledged the leader of the Liberal Movement.

The Seimas Spokesperson stated that she had decided to run for another term quite easily. “It seemed to me that I had not yet done everything as party president. In the current period, withdrawal and non-candidacy would have been illogical, “said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, who was re-elected leader of one of the ruling parties.

By the way, recently she has been increasingly identified as a potential candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. When asked if he was already considering that possibility, V.Čmilytė-Nielsen rejected the direct answer. “I can only confirm that then I will be 40 years old,” laughed the president of Seimas, who turned 38 in August.

The politician said that now all his attention is focused on the work of the Speaker of the Seimas, but did not hide that his current activities are close to his heart. “I like those challenges” lrytas.lt V.Čmilytė-Nielsen said.
