According to S. Petraitienė, the symptoms of COVID-19 are not very different from the symptoms of other colds. The doctor says this is the worst.
“It just came to our knowledge then. You can see that an adult with COVID-19 has a more serious illness: fever, malaise, cough, shortness of breath. And studies have been done with children, of course, they have not yet been described. children with both influenza and coronavirus, because they were very protected when the pandemic began, “says the specialist.
The symptoms are very similar
The doctor says that an analysis of children arriving with flu symptoms and COVID-19 symptoms at a large hospital reception center shows that those symptoms are very similar:
“Influenza is more common in younger children and influenza B is more common in older children. The latter is very similar to coronavirus. It is almost impossible to tell if a child has influenza B or coronavirus without a study.”
Dr. I. Ivaškevičienė adds that usually adults get routine viral infections quite easily, but they can infect a child and he will already have a serious illness. And with COVID-19 the opposite is true and no one yet knows why. Children are easily infected with the coronavirus, and the critical condition is more common in adults.
“Influenza is more difficult in healthy children and COVID-19 is more difficult in people with some chronic diseases. This raises the question of what is more dangerous for children. But the research is necessary because we have a specific cure for the flu and we can only get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Therefore, after examining the flu, it can be cured very quickly, “says S. Petraitienė.
When to worry about a cough
Dr. S. Petraitienė says that coughing is a good thing, so normally you shouldn’t worry about it.
“It is a protective reaction of our body to some foreign body that has entered the respiratory tract. The problem is when a person does not cough. And if a child coughs, it is good because it cleans itself.
Sometimes we are asked what to do if a child coughs. To say such a symptom is to say nothing because there can be many reasons. The most common cause of coughing is a poorly cleaned runny nose. After cleaning, the child will stop coughing. If you cough very deeply, then you may suspect bronchitis, but it is a self-limiting disease. The child will recover on its own without much intervention ”, says the interlocutor.
Anxiety should be taken when the child begins to cough deeply, with shortness of breath. It would be best to see it, because without a specialist it will not be possible to diagnose the disease and prescribe the appropriate treatment:
“If there is a wet cough when the rebound is a yellow, green discharge, then we are generally talking about a bacterial infection that would require antibacterial treatment.”
COVID-19 and influenza together
S. Petraitienė says that it is possible to contract both diseases at the same time: “It is very desirable to prevent this, or at least recognize it quickly and prescribe the appropriate treatment.”
According to Dr. I. Ivaškevičienė, these infectious diseases can greatly complicate the course of the others.
“As we mentioned, at least we have a specific treatment for the flu and we do not have a cure for the coronavirus. There is already scientific evidence that the combination of these two diseases can end very badly.
Many ask whether they should get vaccinated this season or not. I suggest imagining a simple situation: your child has the flu, he has a fever, the temperature is high. In this case, it is not clear what the disease is. But vaccines, in one way or another, can prevent serious complications. So it is only possible to imagine the psychological burden on parents and how much stress is avoided, “says the specialist about the benefits of vaccines.
