When asked when young people start having sex, the doctor replies that we are no different from other European countries in this respect, and we can only rely on anonymous surveys when it comes to the average.
“Clinics at the University of Vilnius, Kaunas usually carry out this type of test and, in fact, we are always the same age, the average is between 16 and 17 years old. We look a lot like other European countries, only we look worse when we compare the number of abortions and teenage pregnancies ”, says the specialist.
Abortions and prevention
Ž. Bumbulienė says the most painful thing when we talk about abortions, especially for young women under 14 years: “Of course, these cases are isolated. The older the girls, the more the number increases.
There are no very clear statistics because only government agencies can provide those statistics, but we are still talking about one hundred, two hundred abortions ”.
According to the doctor, in Lithuania efforts are being made to introduce adolescents to sex education at school: “It seems that we really try to provide information to young people, but do students really get enough information? I would say definitely not. However, it depends on the school, if the teacher is able to communicate, if he wants to or does not dare to talk about these issues ”.
The specialist does not hide that surveys show that adolescents trust doctors more than teachers, so the information must be provided by the doctor.
“Adolescents themselves collect information from the Internet, which, unfortunately, is not always reliable or is often not well understood. They need an additional explanation and they obtain it in such a way that they know the equations, but when they ask how to protect themselves, it turns out that they don’t understand that information much, ”says Ž. Bumbulienė.
The doctor says that the main methods of protection are IUDs, pills, rings, patches, condoms and, of course, emergency contraception. The latter encourages the specialist to choose as little as possible.
“On the one hand, if you already have to choose between abortion or emergency contraception, then of course we choose the pill. The effect of the tablet is that it delays ovulation, so to speak, ovulation will not occur. But for that to happen, you need more hormones than conventional birth control pills.
However, if ovulation has already taken place, fertilization has taken place, unfortunately, but the pregnancy will develop further. If we were to use the pill once, nothing terrible would happen, especially since emergency contraceptive pills are the only ones that are sold without a prescription. But this type of contraception can be used only in very rare cases, when we don’t think it can happen, ”says the woman.
Ž. Bump reveals that frequently taken emergency contraceptive pills throw our hormonal system out of balance. There is a lot of damage to the body and the cycle must be restored, sometimes it is necessary to consult a doctor.
The interviewee affirms that the adolescent who is serious in the relationship and knows about contraception will definitely choose a safer method and all the more so that she will definitely go to the doctor sooner and discuss the best method for her: “This is when we think about sex and look at it responsibly. That is what must be taught to our young people, that is why we need sexual education to be responsible ”.
Hormonal spirals
For adolescents, all protection methods are available, but according to the expert, the question arises, which method is the safest and the best?
“Before when a girl would get married, then she would start having sex, then a boy would show up. It could have been a 16 and 20 year old girl. Now people plan to have children much later, so what to do by then? How to make a girl stay healthy and fertile?
Gynecologists see this and think about it. And so when we talk about which method to choose, we leave the ideal method because there is a certain perception as an ideal contraceptive method. It is one hundred percent safe, the effectiveness does not depend on the doctor, it can be started at any time, it can be stopped at any time, it must have additional benefits for the body. Unfortunately, there is simply no such contraception, ”says the woman.
Ž. Bumbulienė says that the highest efficiency percentage is 99 percent. This security is ensured by long-term user-independent methods.
“This means, for example, that the doctor inserts the coil and it is no longer dependent on the user because it already exists. We cannot forget or do anything. Oh, for example, we should already take the pill every day. I don’t think that at least once, the women who took the pills have not forgotten to take them because it just isn’t possible. Moreover, adolescents who are not used to taking drugs like this make many mistakes, “says the doctor about the safest method.
Two out of every thousand pregnancies can occur with an IUD and eight out of every hundred pregnancies with the pill. Therefore, thinking that the coca method is the best, the most important thing to consider is its effectiveness.
