Landsberg: more and more migrants want to return home

“A representative of our ministry should start working soon in Baghdad, practically these days, at least that is how I have been informed. The problem is that it is generally not easy to start working in Baghdad, “Landsbergis told a news conference at the Foreign Ministry.

According to the Minister, for a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to start working in Baghdad, various trainings and instructions are required, so according to him, this process takes time.

However, Mr. Landsbergis is pleased that there has been a recent increase in the number of illegal immigrants seeking to return home voluntarily.

“This is gratifying because it is practically the only tool that we have today that the government can use: to convince people, to offer them certain arguments on the basis of which people would choose to return.” These figures are increasing, interest is growing, we hope this trend will continue, “he said.

The Minister also acknowledges that the Ministry still faces the challenge of an attempt to persuade Iraq to accept deportees from Iraq.

“Now convincing Iraq to accept deportees is a challenge at the moment, even though the European Union has an agreement with Iraq on deportation, Iraq just views that agreement differently.” That is why the support of our European partners is very important here ”, emphasized G. Landsbergis.

“We are talking and connecting with the commissioners who are responsible for overseeing agreements with third countries, that is, to help persuade Iraq or other countries to accept people who still today may refuse to return voluntarily,” he added.
