In order for the opposition coalition, which currently consists of the LVŽS and the Labor Party, to delegate its leader, it needs more than half the votes of the parliamentarians of the opposition coalition. Currently, 32 “peasants” and 10 other representatives of the Labor Party have reached an agreement in the Seimas, so the withdrawal of ten members would mean that the coalition does not have the required minimum number of 33 seats. The fate of the opposition leader is now in the hands of the other two opposition factions, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) and the Lithuanian Regional Group.
However, the Social Democrats say they still see no need for a treaty with the “peasants” who have repeatedly criticized them. Meanwhile, already in the spring session, the Group of Regions declared its support for the idea of a united opposition and sought to join a joint coalition. However, the Labor Party council, which holds the position of leader of the opposition under the current treaty this session, has not ruled on a broader deal since spring. Now the “workers” say they are waiting for September 10, when the size of the “peasant” faction must be clarified, and only then will they return to negotiations for a leadership position.
A. Norkienė: I only know about the resignation of two members of the faction
Although rumors that up to ten members could leave the ranks of the “peasants” did not surprise representatives of other opposition factions, the largest of the LVŽS faction, Aušrinė Norkienė, claimed that they currently only have knowledge about Lukas Savickas and Tomas Tomilinas. that he had been expelled from the party at the end of July.
“I have not personally heard such rumors and no one in the group has reported it yet. I myself only read in public that Lukas Savickas stated that he would not be in the faction, but I have no request from him, we do not speak. And only from Tom Tomilini I have a request to actually go out. I don’t know anything else. We didn’t have a group meeting and the colleagues didn’t call. I won’t call everyone personally to ask if they stay, “A. Norkienė told Eltai.
However, the “peasant” assured that he will try to speak with other members of the group to avoid further falls.
“It just came to our knowledge then. We were not angry, we had common goals and I asked for projects. Nobody said that he would not give because he would not be with you. The work as he did all summer. Just those new signals from the journalists,” said A Norkienė.
The president of the group of regions says he is interested in the unity of the opposition
However, the opposition coalition could still be preserved by the Group of Regions, whose president, Jonas Pinskus, says he is interested in the unity of the opposition.
“Our position is that the opposition must be as united and strong as possible at all times. To control a position due to position, you see what you are doing without control. It is a tragedy ”, is convinced J. Pinskus.
“In any case, we will join forces only to join forces in the face of any disagreement. On behalf of that Lithuania, my head must do that,” he added.
When asked if the chances of preserving the opposition coalition are still assured, J. Pinskus expressed the hope that the required number of Seimas members will still be assembled.
“I hope and hope that the opposition will nonetheless gather the necessary number of reasonable members of the Seimas to be able to elect an opposition leader and represent the opposition,” the MP replied silently for some time.
According to J. Pinskus, the withdrawal of some members of the LVŽS does not mean that the dissolution of the opposition coalition is threatened, since the new faction can also cooperate with the “workers” and “peasants” who have already concluded the agreement.
“Now it is not clear what will be the position of the rupture, what will be the position of the” peasants “, the questionnaires have not diminished. Perhaps even more emerged. Will the “peasants” be friends of the Skvernel faction? So the numbers are completely different, “reasoned the major of the Group of Regions, adding that it would be necessary to wait until September 10. Seimas began its sessions.
The politician also did not emphasize that the Labor Party Council had not yet made a decision in the spring approving the participation of the Group of Regions in the coalition agreement. This, in his opinion, is simply a bargaining game between the chairman of the Labor Party.
“The ingenious games of Viktor Uspaskich, as always. He is a serious negotiator. He will make the most of everything. That is how you understand it here,” explained J. Pinskus.
The Labor Party Council will make the necessary decision only when the size of the LVŽS faction is clarified
Mr. Uspaskich’s negotiating skills also appear to be due to the fact that “workers” are generally reluctant to support the accession of the Group of Regions to the opposition agreement. The eldest of the group, Viktor Fyodorov, assures that they are also in favor of the unity of the opposition, but now they only await the final decision of the coalition partners.
“We are interested in the opposition working together. Of course, the devils know that when it comes to ten people, it is difficult to say how the ‘peasants’ will proceed. Clearly, if they stand out, joint work between them will probably not be possible. both groups. In any case, we are interested in the opposition working together. We will look for opportunities, talk to everyone and see how things go. We are not attached to the position that we need to have an opposition leader right now. Therefore, we are awaiting the behavior of our colleagues, “said V. Fyodorov in his position, adding that the agreement of the opposition coalition will probably have to be reviewed again.
“If the ‘peasants’ are divided, which seems to be already visible in the public sphere, then in any case we will have to review all the agreements in the opposition,” he said.
According to V. Fyodorov, the Council of the Labor Party has not yet made a decision on the Group of Regions, because they simply did not want to participate in speculation. According to the largest of the Labor Party faction, they intend to decide when the size of the “peasant” faction will be clear.
“If decomposition happens there, apparently on September 10, that should be obvious, then we can get back to that topic. Now there is speculation: there will be, there will not be, there will be no acceptance, so we thought there really was no need to rush a decision. Let him fix his relationship, and then at the beginning of the session, he can sit down and see how the work progresses, ”the MP explained.
However, he agreed that if at least ten MPs were to leave the LVŽS faction on September 10, the “workers” would lose their position as leader of the opposition in the autumn session of the Seimas, at least temporarily.
“If ten people leave the ‘campesinos’ on September 10, it is normal under the current treaty that there are not enough votes to have an opposition leader. We ask a lot of questions and we don’t ask them, all the more so because we don’t care about publication. As divisions and other issues unfold, we look forward to what will happen. Maybe everything is fine, maybe everything else is scary here. If it’s bad, it means we’ll have to talk, “Fyodorov said.
The Social Democrats have no intention of joining the opposition coalition
At that time, Algirdas Sys, the largest of the LSDP faction, does not change position: the Social Democrats do not intend to join the opposition coalition.
“We didn’t really plan the connection, there were no such languages, we didn’t talk about it during the intersessional period either. We talked about non-fusion, not fusion,” said A. Sysas.
The views of the parliamentarian would not change if “peasants” or “workers” offered them better connection conditions. Sys says it just doesn’t see any benefit from the deal.
“I do not see any added value of that agreement. The same” peasants “forged us to the cross when we had agreed purely with Conservatives and Liberals on the rotation of the opposition leader. He kept complaining that we were selling to the conservatives. Now they offer the same thing. and their ideologies are different, especially the “peasants” and ours. Negotiating only with a leader … Even without that position, we can make our proposals, represent ourselves and not be obliged in any way to other comrades, “said the social democrat.
However, he is not surprised that the LVŽS faction finally began to split. According to Sys, some “peasant” politicians were united only by the advantages of their presence in the ruling majority, and after 2020. As the parliamentary elections became an opposition faction, the differences of some parliamentarians became a most important factor.
“It just came to our notice then. Such a faction will always fall sooner or later. It fell last quarter, but not much. One thing when you’re in power, there are more cakes out there, some kind of crumbs that fall off, is that people blame each other less. And when you are in the opposition and rarely get dessert, the obvious differences begin. It was obvious that this would happen, “explained the major of the LSDP faction.
However, the Social Democrats have yet to take stock to assess whether the opposition coalition will split at all. According to him, it is necessary to see the exact numbers and assess the situation at that time.
“It just came to our notice then. We have to wait for a decision to be made. How much will disappear, how much will work. Are there enough people for them to regroup and continue that deal?” Because I had to speak to two members of the Party Seimas. Labor, they themselves had serious doubts, because during this period the position of leader of the opposition would belong to them, if they would have enough votes for the opposition coalition “to exist in general,” said A. Sysas.
ELTA recalls that Rima Baškienė mentioned his withdrawal from the LVŽS faction on Friday. Although the politician assures that he is still hopeful that things will turn out well, when asked about the prospects of his destiny in the party, he no longer hides, the resignation is more likely.
“I wait and look for roads until the last minute and I think that not all the bridges are burned. I know that divorce only happens when a marriage is dissolved by court order, ”he told Eltai.
Although the “peasant” did not confirm that ten MPs intended to leave the faction, R. Baškienė admitted that there would be enough people to leave and form a new faction.
“I think it will be the formation of a new group, it is probably not so small,” he said.
