President Gitanas Nausėda immediately stated that he did not support it and would try to ensure that the requirements were not met. The issues were shaken by the mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis. He and his advisers put on a near-real show in an attempt to avoid questions about gays and marches.
Before Saturday’s LGBT march, its organizers even asked the country’s second most important leader, the Spokesperson for Seimas. And even after receiving so much attention, the organizers of the march even kept the Speaker of the Seimas waiting. 2 out of 4 were 7 minutes late.
After another 4 minutes, the rest of the organizers rush in. They requested admission to the president of the Seimas to be able to deliver the requirements to the government before the march on Saturday. And a total of 14 of them.
“The first thing we demand is the right to marriage, the couple and adoption, we believe that this must be guaranteed to all the Lithuanian people. We also demand that schools, colleges and universities learn about the history of the LGBTQ + community, ”says Rokas Budrauskas, the organizer of Kaunas Pride.
Even President Gitanas Nausėda reacted to such demands. He stated that he would do everything possible to prevent this from becoming a reality: “I am against, I am against such demands and I believe that they will not be implemented in Lithuania, I, as president, will do everything in my power so that such demands cannot be implemented at this time. “
Between the demands made and the change in the law, which now equates information on homosexuality with harmful minors; social guarantees and non-discrimination at work, in medical institutions; gender reassignment surgery; Criminalization of “hate speech”. Organizers also call for a ban on therapies that persuade homosexuals to choose a traditional sexual orientation.
“What we want is not an exclusive right, it is the right provided in article 29 of the Constitution of Lithuania that all Lithuanians are equal, and we simply want the same rights,” says R. Budrauskas.
By the way, there was a gender identity change without going to court. Simply put, letting a man choose how he feels: a man or a woman. For homosexuals themselves to explain themselves, it is not necessary to perform surgery either. Theoretically, this means that even with the male genitalia, but in the documents, a person who has changed gender to a woman could use, for example, female toilets or changing rooms.
“Some of them are already being resolved, others are being prepared, some of them I have addressed to the initiators of the meeting, asking perhaps a broader explanation or perhaps concretization, really important issues”, says the Spokesperson of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė – Nielsen.
On Saturday, organizers in Kaunas expect to receive about a thousand participants for the march. They themselves do not take care of security, they expect the police to guarantee order. Whether it will be a legitimate event with permission or an unauthorized demonstration will be clear tomorrow when the court announces its verdict.
“Kaunas is really ready, at least from what we talk to the policemen, it seems that Smetona will soon give a coup in Kaunas, because there will be a lot of protection,” says the organizer of “Kaunas pride”.
The mayor of Kaunas began to congratulate him avoiding the topic.
Matijošaitis himself, who recently tried to joke that he may have smelled in Kaunas as the gay march is coming, is already avoiding these and gay topics: “Oh, somehow I don’t want to joke, I don’t want to be serious, like this that maybe we’ll change the subject. “
The Kaunas Municipality has not issued a permit to march in Laisvės Alley as it is still being renovated. It would be dangerous for homosexuals to march and hinder other passersby. Obviously, the LGBT issue is very difficult for Matijošaitis: “Will my evaluation be important to you? – Interesting. Opinion of the head of the second largest city. – Actually? – Unfortunately. “Let’s take a break, I’ll answer you right away, okay?” “It’s okay.”
After consulting with the advisers, Matijošaitis stated that what the court would decide on the fly would be. But he personally evaluated the demands made. “As a normal, healthy man who lives and loves a woman, I am visibly aware of what the opinion is. And here, as you want, you too ”, he emphasizes.
Matijošaitis advisers tried several times to interrupt journalists’ questions on this topic, but to no avail: Liberty Alley is for residents and leisure, not my opinion. “
Matijošaitis even began to congratulate journalists for not having to answer questions:
“I do the same, I personally don’t need them, my guidance, I like myself. – Thanks. – Please. If you come to make fun of that, you say so. – No, we just want normal responses. – It has been 10 times that you have asked the same question. – Because we don’t hear any response. “It is not necessary, who needs those answers now.”
Proponents of the march say the Kaunas municipality’s decision not to harmonize the permit is politically motivated. The same arguments are used by the Family Movement, which has not received permission to elect the Seimas of the Vilnius government.
“Anyway, I speak because it is enshrined in our Constitution, freedom of assembly and expression are ingrained things and should be used by all the people of the Republic of Lithuania,” says G. Nausėda.
The police today asked people not to go to the march if they do not have permission. Failure to do so can result in fines of up to € 600 for both organizers and participants. Officials warn that on Saturday they may restrict access to Kaunas or Laisvės alley in general.
