If the Vilnius city municipality decided on Tuesday not to grant permission to hold a demonstration near the Seimas on September 10, Artūras Orlauskas, one of the leaders of the Lithuanian Family Movement organizing the event, claims that the decision of the government of the capital will certainly be appealed to the court. According to him, despite all the arguments of the municipality, the rally organized by the Family Movement near the Seimas will take place as planned.

“It should be clear to the municipality, that it has already lost a court due to the illegal denial of the permit in June. There, the decision is unequivocal: the protesters choose a place to protest. The freedom of assembly and protest cannot be violated.” said A. Orlauskas to Eltai.

According to him, the rally organized by the Family Movement near the Seimas will take place in any case.

“The constitution is valid regardless of the wishes of the municipalities,” he said.

“It just came to our knowledge then. They keep trampling on the Constitution, that’s why protests are made,” added A. Orlauskas.

The Vilnius City Municipality announced on Tuesday that it had decided not to grant permission to the Family Movement near the Seimas on September 10. to hold a rally of thousands of people.

According to Adam Bužinskas, deputy director of the municipal administration, this decision was due to at least several reasons.

“It just came to our notice then. Permission is requested for up to 15 thousand people, and we see that physically many people in that area just don’t fit in. The safe distance to the Seimas is 75 meters. We also received a separate request from the Library. Martynas Mažvydas that his work is being interrupted and we have to guarantee access to his plot. Therefore, that area is decreasing even more, “explained A. Bužinskas.

“The second reason is the time. It was requested to extend the permission of the event until 10 pm We believe that the square itself is poorly lit and this will complicate the work of the officials from a purely security point of view,” he continued.

“The third reason is that the Department of Homeland Security has delivered part of the certificate, which clearly states that there is currently an increased risk of various gatherings that could result in certain acts of violence,” said a representative of the Vilnius city municipality.

Adomas Bužinskas, deputy director of the Municipal Administration, assured that if the representatives of the Family Movement decided to appeal this decision, if the court lost the court, the respective decision would be executed.

V. Čmilytė: there is time for a compromise

“I have not yet had the opportunity to fully understand the decision of the Vilnius city municipality. In any case, this decision is the exclusive competence of the municipality. On the other hand, the Constitution guarantees all Lithuanian citizens the right of peaceful assembly and protest. And whether you agree or disagree with the objectives of the planned rally, I respect that guarantee. Of course, its implementation must comply with the law, and comments from the relevant services must be taken into account. If a meeting of such scope and duration is not possible in one place, both parties still have time to find a compromise ”, confirms the president of Seimas in a comment sent to Elta.
