Castle Ring Repair: Will It Last Until September 1?

September is approaching and the deadline for the Castle Ring repair must be completed. Citizens who have been looking for other routes for almost half a year are worried about what will happen if the works of one of the most important transport arteries take longer.

Lack of hands

Although the barricades in the Castle Ring area have disappeared, the view is still far from remembering the finish line. The city authorities ensure that everything is going according to plan. Representatives of the Kauno Tiltai company, which is doing the work, make no secret that they may have to work nights to comply with the terms. The biggest problem is the lack of staff. This, according to the most observant inhabitants, is evidenced in the advertisements pasted on construction equipment, which offer work.

I saw photos of the works. The images are not what I expected.

The end of the reconstruction according to the plan is also questioned by the citizens. No one is concerned that in September, when schoolchildren and students return to the city, the city center will turn into a huge traffic jam. A similar scenario existed in May, when traffic conditions changed dramatically after the closure of the P. Vileišis bridge that connects the central part of Kaunas with the Vilijampolė and Šilainiai districts and the nearby Castle Ring. Already on the first day, huge traffic jams formed. The drivers cursed the government, which predicted transportation problems like never before. Some of the residents interviewed assured that even if the works were completed in September, the situation in this place would change little. Public transportation, they say, simply won’t be shared on the street with cars.

“I saw photos of the works. The images are not what I expected. The lanes are narrow, if I’m not mistaken there are only two. One for buses, another for cars, but it is such that only one bicycle fits ”, said one of the readers of the kauno.diena.lt portal.

Optimistic mood

Not everyone has such a pessimistic frame of mind. Those on the other side of the barricades are confident that the nearly four-month wait and the inconvenience of the same amount of time behind the wheel will pay off. The most intense urban transport hub, which has undergone changes, is said to become safer and more convenient for all road users.

“The marked lanes of traffic have already started on the Kaunas castle ring. A new network of Czech contact trolleybuses is hung up. As far as I know, trolleybuses will travel on it at the same speed as buses and will not shed their “mustache”, – another reader of the kauno.diena.lt portal shared his impressions after crossing the Castle Ring territory on Saturday morning.

According to him, there are more finished works. There are already about 300 m of grass and about 2 km of curbs. Some of them are made of granite, stronger and more resistant. The specific shape of the new curbs will allow easier and more convenient access to the curb for low-floor public transportation. At the end and repair of the P. Vileišis bridge.

“The railings have already been cleaned and painted, the construction is being handled and approved”, the reader was pleased with the progress of the work.

It will be more convenient for everyone.

According to Kauno Tiltai, the construction of the road surface is being changed around the Castle Ring object, asphalt pavement of three different layers: 10, 8 and 4 cm is being laid. The entrances are maintained, the sidewalks are renewed by laying tiles and pavements. After reconstruction, wider sidewalks will be installed on St. Gertrūdos Street from Šauklių st. Alleys of freedom. There will also be a pavement on the side of the road from the St. Intersection of Gertrūdos and Gimnazijos streets to Laisvės Alley. S t. At the intersection of Gertrūdos and Šauklių streets, the crosswalk will move to a security island. The Kaunas Castle stop will be more spacious for public transport and passengers. Islands of increased security at the roundabout. Its function is to avoid dangerous and unauthorized maneuvers of vehicles in the ring. A much more spacious stop at Kaunas Castle is planned for public transport passengers. Kauno street lighting will install modern LED luminaires in the rebuilt part.

Completion of repair work should improve public transport connections. After installing an additional A lane before entering the Šauklių st. from St. Gertrūdos St., buses and trolleybuses will no longer have to line up with cars.
