Iran’s Scariest Prison for Political Prisoners – Images Leaked from Inside Are Just Shocking

Ieva Koreivaitė, an Iranian researcher at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University and a researcher in the Middle East, says that by programmatically filtering the videos, she probably tried to visually show that the current Iranian regime and its president have black spots.

The leaked recordings show that the monitors at the Evin Prison Observatory fade one after another, showing images from various corners of the prison, and the message “Cyberataka” or “Protest for the release of political prisoners” is lit. Officials are filming what is happening on their mobile phones.

Evin Prison

The following post shows how a man passes out while walking outside and cannot get up. The officers pull the man like a knot of the hands towards the building, through the stairs. The stretched man looks as if he has been starving for a long time. In other searches, officers beat and kicked the man, hitting and shoving each other.

The programmers themselves, calling themselves “Ali Justice”, reported that the footage had been leaked to show everyone the brutal prison conditions. The name “Ali” seems to refer to the cousin and daughter of Ali, the highly respected Shiite Muslim prophet Muhammad. Shiites worship him as a saint.

Following the leaked videos, Mohammad Mehdi Haj-Mohammadi, the commander of Evin Prison, publicly apologized, surprising many. However, I. Koreivaitė says that the apology was probably not sincere, because the prison administrator tried to suggest that it was like the behavior of some “bad”, non-systemic officials.

“In this case, the game is that what is happening now is a bottom-up initiative, and the regime supposedly is good, it would not. This is an attempt to wash the stain ”, says the interlocutor.

15,000 vietprison for intellectuals and opponents of the regime

The prison itself was established in 1972, that is, before the Islamic Revolution, which turned Iran into a completely different state in 1979. Since then, the prison has grown from about 300 to 15,000 places. There are around 800 units in this prison.

“The Iranian regime, whatever it calls itself, be it an Islamic republic or an Islamic democracy, is essentially an ideological regime. Although it declares special goals of justice and high morality, like any ideological regime, it is extremely fierce, destroying apostates or enemies of ideology. Therefore, that prison was very swollen, growing, growing until it became a prison where about 15,000 people are imprisoned, ”said I. Koreivaitė.

Most opposition figures, dissidents or journalists are incarcerated in Evin Prison, but when the regime is based on ideology, virtually anyone can turn into the opposite.

“More recently, there has been a scandal in which Australian travelers have been detained in Iran and imprisoned in Evine for three months for a drone raised in an unauthorized location. This was perceived as a threat to the regime, thus falling within the definition of political prisoners. There are also many people with dual citizenship there, as this appears to be a source of threat to the Iranian regime. Iranians often hide dual citizenship, but such people are detained because they are believed to have adopted dual citizenship to spy. “Without a doubt, journalists who are considered political opponents and opponents of the regime are also imprisoned there,” said the researcher.

According to I. Koreivaitė, social activists are also incarcerated in Evin Prison. For example, active Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh was convicted of defending women who did not wear the hijab in public in court. She was originally incarcerated in an Evine unit and is currently housed in a Qarchak prison for women.

“Evin Prison is often referred to as Evin University because of the large number of Iranian intellectuals, journalists and activists who have criticized the ideological regime,” he said.

I. Koreivaitė noted that a group of programmers calling themselves “Ali Justice”, who leaked the grim videos, said that Evin prison was “a smudge on a black Raisi turban and a white beard.”

Ebrahim Raisi is the President of Iran, who held various positions in the Iranian judiciary for many years before taking office. In 1988, just after the end of the Iran-Iraq war, he was one of four members of the persecution committees and is responsible for sending thousands of political prisoners to myriop. That committee was called the “death committee.” Most of the dead were sympathizers and members of the mujahideen of the Iranian people, as well as the communist and fedano parties.

This leak likely reminded Raisi of a black past, as well as sparked public discontent.

Interestingly, there is the Ebrat Museum in Tehran, which should bear witness to the cruelty of SAVAK, the security police of the pre-revolutionary Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Looking at the leaked videos, it seems that the cruelty of the chess security guards is not much different from the cruelty of the ayatollahs.

“That prison describes the means to torture people, but everything is very similar to what is happening in Evine. That jail opens like a propaganda-type museum, which shows how bad chess was and how it treated political prisoners, and here it is exactly the same parallel ”, says I. Koreivaitė, adding that the message to the regime had to be to be very unhappy .

In Iran, society has long expressed its discontent with the ruling regime, with some of the biggest protests taking place since the 2009 presidential elections, when the so-called “Green Movement” was formed, staging mass protests. Before the pandemic in Iran, people also protested quite profusely and frequently: both for economic reasons and the mandatory wearing of hijabs by women, and for other reasons. So far the regime has managed to quell the protests, some of these people have been killed or found in prisons, including Evine.

“He even had an acquaintance from Germany who decided to travel to Iran in 2009, when the Green Movement was formed. He was somewhere near the protests and arrested him. It is important to note that Evin prison is a black hole that does not It is completely clear who controls it. Basically, there are two forces fighting in Iran: the guards of the revolution and the security forces. They compete with each other. It happened to that German who after being arrested went to court, the judge He apologized, told him that he had made a mistake and that he was free, but the officers took him behind bars and put him back in the same Evin prison for several months. Then one night, they took him out by bus and put him away. they expelled at night ”, says I. Koreivaitė.
