They are offered free tickets to the homeland, as well as 300 euros of additional cost. However, this proposal did not impress the migrants and everything turned into an acute conflict.
L. Kasčiūnas tried to explain to the migrants that so far none of the migrants have received political asylum in Lithuania, the same is waiting for the migrants from Africa settled in Vydėnai.
Kasčiūnas and migrants
The Seimas member explained that if they did not agree to return home themselves, they would be deported back to their homeland in any case. Furthermore, they are still awaiting trial by the court for illegally crossing the border, which carries a penalty of up to 2 years in prison.
After hearing this, some migrants simply became enraged and began to explain that their rights were being violated. The newcomers explained that there were times when Lithuanians themselves emigrated en masse to other countries.
L. Kasčiūnas reiterated that such situations are completely different and cannot be compared.
The migrants also resented the MP’s statement that none of them had received asylum yet. They explained that their stories should be heard and that they would go to the Seimas ombudsman to find out the statements they had heard.
“You must process our asylum applications,” the migrants shouted indignantly.
L. Kasčiūnas said that their stories would be heard, but reiterated that no one would be granted asylum yet.
“If he does not agree to return now and is not granted asylum, he will go to jail for crossing the border illegally,” he explained.
After this confrontation, L. Kasčiūnas said that this was the first time that the migrants had reacted so fiercely to his proposal to return home.
They managed to communicate more amicably with other migrants, but were not disappointed by the opportunity to return.
“I will be better off living here as long as I need, but I will not return home,” replied the migrant sitting next to the old school building. – I can live for years, but I’m not safe at home, so I’d better stay here.
