The African Basketball Championship kicked off in Rwanda on Tuesday with an impressive performance from Walter Tavares.
Cape Verde led by Cabo Real (1-0) in extra time 77:71 (14:14, 12:20, 23:21, 17:11, 11: 5) broke the Angolan basketball players (0-1).
Tavares scored 20 points in 41 minutes (6/7 doubles, 8/14 penalty), bounced 18 and took 3 balls, blocked 6 shots, made 1 assists, made 2 errors and scored 39 utility points.
The dominant forward’s performance was capped off by an episode late in the fourth quarter. Before the start of the last minute of the quarter, Tavares made such a powerful insertion that the sand board in Kigali did not resist and broke into small particles.
Such a surprise suspended the game for a while, and after resuming it, the team stopped scoring points and the duel went into extra time.
In it, Jeffrey Nunes Xavier and Ivan Almeida each scored three points, and Cape Verde’s lead rose to 6 points (74:68), which was enough until the end of the match.
