On Monday, at 9.40 a.m., a report was received that a fire had broken out in the territory of the Kretingalė Eldership, Kukuliškių Village, Pasakos Street.
It has been reported that a man may be burning in the woods near the bunker.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department, rescuers found a burning man and self-extinguishing grass around the roof of the Kukuliškės battery.
The 67-year-old man suffered severe burns. The rotten backpack is extinguished with dust and sand.
Upon reaching the ambulance, the doctors diagnosed the man’s death.
The incident is being investigated by the Klaipėda County Police Chief Commissariat.
“An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of death,” Andromeda Grauslienė, representative of the Klaipėda County Police Commissariat, told BNS.
The Memel-Nord Coastal Battery (also called Giruliai, Kukuliškės) is part of the German defensive fortifications installed in 1939. The same artillery blocks were built in Giruliai, including a fire checkpoint, better known in public space as the “Black Fortress”.
