Greece calls on the EU to help Afghanistan’s neighbors to avoid a wave of migration

Greece is strengthening protection of its land border with Turkey, officials say. The country’s media reports that the Evre fence will soon be extended by 40 kilometers.

Dedicated to new drones, cameras and radars, 250 additional border guards will soon be hired.

Micotakis spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday about possible migration from Afghanistan.

The Greek government stated that “both leaders discussed the need for support [Afganistano] neighbors so Afghans stay as close to home as possible. “

There are currently 40,000 in Greece. asylum seekers and refugees from Afghanistan. Afghans make up the majority of migrants arriving in Greece, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Greece was at the forefront of the 2015 migration crisis, with more than a million people entering Turkey from the EU.
