Dalia works at a hospital in Kaunas, which was a support hospital for COVID-19 in December: “We pediatricians went to help adults with COVID-19. I really had to visit a lot of patients so I would probably get infected at work. I wasn’t in the stores for a week before I got sick, I didn’t interact with anyone. It was home-work-home. “
At first, the usual symptoms.
The woman says she didn’t feel any serious symptoms at first, just a fever at night, just before New Year’s Eve. He decided it was worth checking and the hospital showed a positive coronavirus test.
“At first they treated me at home, but around January 4 I started to have low oxygen saturation, I started coughing. After taking pictures of my lungs with my colleagues, I saw for myself that I have pneumonia and need oxygen and go to the hospital, ”Dalia recalls.
The doctor decided to go to bed in the Kaunas clinics, because the serum with antibodies was applied here. I thought it would heal much faster. After spending a day in the hospital, Dalia’s condition deteriorated greatly and she was taken to resuscitation:
“I still remember it a bit, but not quite. I don’t recall living in intensive care at all. It all got to the point where I needed to be intubated, given oxygen therapy, and given oxygen therapy for two weeks, quite a long time. “
Unexpected complications
After two weeks of oxygen therapy, the doctors decided that there was enough oxygen for Partia, so they removed the tube. However, the woman did not recover so easily.
“The CT scan revealed that another complication had occurred: a stroke. Apparently some blood flowed into the brain and I had a hemorrhagic stroke. I was very hard on that.
I remember well when they took me out of resuscitation and when I realized that half of my body was paralyzed due to a stroke. Colleagues pulmonologists and pulmonary doctors referred me to a rehabilitation clinic in Kulautuva. I could hardly sit, eat, or walk on my own. In a word, the condition was very bad ”, says the interlocutor about the unexpected complication.
Hard work in rehab
The rehabilitation even took several months: from February 9 to May 12. Dalia says that her fellow physicians, physical therapists, and physical therapy nurses have gone to great lengths and taught the woman to walk, sit, and climb stairs again.
The interlocutor admits that it was extremely difficult to recover, it was also difficult when he returned home. But he is glad that he was able to go back to work since mid-June.
“Now I walk, I don’t seem to be limping, I breathe myself, I think I can speak on my own. I can eat, I can fully serve myself, I drive my car again and go back to work. I don’t know what helped me so much, if here my colleagues gave me a second life, or here my body improved. Maybe the vaccine, which was already made when I got infected, also helped, because it caused the production of antibodies.
Well, it probably all helped. For the professionals in Kulautuva, I should kneel and bow because they worked very professionally. The man who did not control the right side of the body now controls everything. They did a real miracle, ”says the pediatrician, holding back the tears tightly.
Now Dalia faces another complication. Three months after getting sick, her hair began to lose a lot. The doctor says that about 20% of people suffer from this complication, which is not really easy to treat.
The relentless desire to live
“When I was in resuscitation, I was repressed, then I just existed, everything was done by other doctors. And then once I understood what was going on, I didn’t want to accept the fact that there was nothing I could do. However, when I realized that it was really bad for me not to be able to control the right side of my body, there was a great desire to live, work, walk in the will ”, Dalia recalls the ray of hope.
According to the interlocutor, initially the physiotherapist communicates with the patient only in bed, then he begins to walk on wheels, walk with a walker. Dalia says that she tried to listen to all the instructions, but was sometimes disappointed that not everything became so simple, including embarrassment.
“I was at risk when I got sick when I was 66 years old. I didn’t have to get infected, we really had enough protection, but not a single colleague was sick. I am glad that my colleagues are not so sick after vaccination ”, says the doctor about the benefits of vaccines.
