If you’re looking for Palanga accommodation through popular hotel booking pages, the prices offered there are likely to start to hurt you. During the summer season, the price of a night for two people in many hotels and pensions ranges from 60 to 200 euros and more. There are weekends when you don’t get anything without 150 euros a night. And sometimes it happens that even those prices are not maintained. For example, through Joninė or Mindaugine, all the places that itch at least a little are dissolved and only the most expensive are left. By the way, they amount to between 500 and 600 euros per night.

It is not surprising that tourists facing this sigh and complain, everywhere they can write reviews about the cost of Palanga and promise not to return to this resort again. For probably a good decade, Lithuanians liked comparing the prices of our coastal capital with those of foreign resorts, mainly with the popular towns of the Antalya region in Turkey. Many people do not understand how you can buy a ticket for a week in Turkey for 200-300 euros, including flights, hotel and meals. When in Palanga at that time, entrepreneurs asked for only one night. “We don’t need luxury, we just want to spend the night,” many say.

For many years, it probably seemed to me, as it probably did to many readers of this text, that the cheapest accommodation in Palanga was with local grandmothers. They convert their houses and apartments into mini-hotels during the summer season. Some apartments are more modestly furnished, others better, but these never inflate prices. Their system is simple – they usually don’t charge for the room or the house, but they charge “per head” – that is. it says the price of a “head” and takes as many as people came. Previously, in addition to litas, a person had to pay 10 to 25 litas. Now, with the introduction of the euro, the prices are the same, but only in this currency, from 10 to 25 euros. The grandmothers of Palanga are the ones who should really enjoy the exchange of money in our country.

Those who save are used to staying with their grandmothers since ancient times and do not even look for anything else. However, there are people for whom accommodation with a stranger seems unacceptable and hotels have no money.

Vistik is not the cheapest of Palanga’s grandmothers. Excuse me, dear ones! I learned this good news from those who save the most for leisure: Prospective students have shown that their budget is extremely limited. So limited that even with grandmothers it is too expensive for them. Twin brothers Jurgis and Jokūbas Šimkaičiai, who finished twelfth grade this year at the Rasa Gymnasium of Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University, spent long hours searching for cheap housing in Palanga and found a “Politechnika” holiday home that has survived since ancient times. Soviet times. Prices for accommodation here during the summer season start at just 5 euros per person. It is true that sometimes it goes up to 6-7 euros, depending on the days of the week you arrive.

Best of all, these holiday homes are not located anywhere on the outskirts of the city, but in a great location: on Dariaus and Girėno streets, right next to the place where the famous luxury lover, the businessman Žilvinas Grigaitis, has his summer home. As announced on the Booking.com page: Politechnika is only 800 meters from the Baltic Sea and J. Basanavičiaus Street and 200 meters from Birutė Park and the Amber Museum. The closest coffee shop is said to be only 50 meters from the house.

“It’s better here than with my grandmothers, more privacy, the same as living in a hotel,” say the twin brothers, who spent a couple of nights in a room with former colleagues from the Politechnika. These vacation homes have different accommodations and different types of rooms, from very modest to slightly better. My interlocutors did not demand anything, they only asked for the cheapest room.

“We stayed for the weekend and paid 7 euros each per person. For this price, we received two single beds, a set of bedding and a small and rather narrow towel,” says Jacob.

Just do not dream of luxury – Polytechnika looks quite modest, the exterior of several buildings is already in need of repair. You may even think that they are no longer used. Inside, the situation is better, you can see that some rooms have recently been renovated, repainted, tiled and the like.

It should be noted that guests do not receive a private bathroom when booking the lowest price. Shared toilets and showers must be used. There is no shortage of them in these vacation homes – there are separate men’s and women’s rooms on each floor of the building. It is true that the twin brothers who were on vacation here noticed a constant lack of toilet paper. Guys recommend prospective vacationers to have their own roll, maybe not one. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a difficult situation.

But there are other advantages. When staying at the Polytechnika Holiday Apartment, you can use the built-in refrigerators in the corridors, cool off with drinks or put sausage and cheese. Only, as the guests of this place say, it is necessary to mark your name and room number on each product, otherwise you cannot leave the delicacy. “It is a very popular place. Both families with children and young people stay. They are all very friendly, we really liked the movement ”, say the young people.

Indre and Mantas from Šiauliai are on vacation in this very cheap holiday home for many years. “We have a bright room with a view of the trees. Here we feel like a vacation in the park, a very cozy place ”, they say. As another advantage of Politechnika, Indre highlighted the kitchen of the holiday home for common use. “We like to go on vacation alone and we don’t go to restaurants. We boil the eggs in the morning and the salad at night. Here are all the pots, pans, knives, plates. It’s definitely better than staying with one person, after what which is a shame to use something there, take it. And here, nobody is looking, do what you want “, the girl is happy.

I tried to find cheap rooms in this vacation home online. Unfortunately, the most popular search engines weren’t showing the prices vacationers told me to meet. For example, Booking.com offered accommodation in a two-bedroom apartment for four people for € 84 per night. Divided by four, 21 euros per person.
Therefore, I applied for the administration of Politechnika. Turns out, you can’t find the cheapest beds online. You must contact the vacation home directly. Call in advance, or come to the place and reserve here. Odeta Otesen, who has been running this place for several years, confirmed that it really is the cheapest in Palanga.

“Very often we offer beds for 5 euros, for example in a triple room. The total amount would be € 15 per night for three people. It seems like a mouthful even for frugal students, ”the vacation home manager asked to visit that room.

I also learned from Ms. Odeta Otesen that the full name of this place is KTU Holiday Home Politechnika. This means that this holiday institution is subordinate to the university located in Kaunas.

“First of all, we reserve places for the KTU community, and what is left, please, can be used by all the people from all over Lithuania,” explained the kind director. I was delighted that the children’s and youth camps stayed here year after year. “When a large group is looking for a cheap place to stay, we are the ideal choice,” he says.

Guests can use the overstuffed sofas in the post office manager, for example, in the evenings, many people like to watch TV here. However, there is only one, so you will have to negotiate with other vacationers which channel to watch.
