G. Nausėda signed a decree on granting rights to soldiers during an emergency

This week, during its extraordinary session, the Seimas approved the Law that modifies article 13 of the Statute on the use of military force and the Law that modifies article 18 of the Law on the organization of the national defense system and military service, which Allows Soldiers to avoid a threat to the public when necessary to assist police, SBGS, or VST forces in the performance of their duties.

The head of state signed these reforms to the law, emphasizing that they are of utmost importance at this time, since they allow the use of military assistance in the most efficient way without declaring a state of emergency in the country.

Pursuant to these laws, the Government Emergency Commission approached the Government with a request to present a proposal to the President to grant soldiers the rights provided by law. In view of the current situation, the number of foreigners crossing the border illegally has increased several times this year, the president has decided to grant soldiers statutory rights to work with officials of the State Border Guard and the Public Security Service and effectively manage the migration crisis – to use legal measures against illegal migrants crossing the border, detained and / or housed with the Republic of Belarus and others who contribute to illegal migration or who impede the proper performance of the functions that they they assign the forces of the civil protection system.

Soldiers will have the relevant rights only when operating in the border section and in places of temporary detention and / or accommodation of people who have crossed the border illegally.

The Presidential Decree will enter into force upon its adoption. It is presented to the Seimas for approval at the next session of the Seimas.
