In July, Lithuanian soldiers began laying sharp cables on the border with Belarus in response to the drastic increase in illegal immigration in recent months.
Lithuanian officials call the increased migration flows a hybrid aggression by the Belarusian regime. As a result, a state of emergency has been declared in the country.
“Ukraine has sent humanitarian aid to the Republic of Lithuania for security reasons,” reported the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
The service shared photos of how the cutting wire rolls were loaded onto a tractor. The report says this is the first shipment of its kind to Lithuania, with more cables planned to be shipped in September.
Last week, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an order “to help Lithuania overcome the consequences of the emergency caused by the sudden increase in the number of illegal immigrants from Belarus.”
By means of this order, V. Zelenskis obliged the government to provide humanitarian aid to Lithuania through measures that made it possible to strengthen the protection of the border with Belarus.
Dmytro Kuleba, head of Ukrainian diplomacy, said last month that Kiev’s help was needed because Lithuania “faced an unprecedented migration crisis” but did not have a sharp enough wire.
More than 4.1 thousand people arrived illegally in Lithuania this year. migrants, but their flow has drastically decreased recently, allowing border guards to return the migrants to Belarus.
Most of the migrants trying to cross the border illegally come from the Middle East and Africa.
Soldiers are also currently helping border guards to manage the situation at the border.
On Tuesday, the Seimas recognized the project of a fence on the border with Belarus of special state importance, and allowed it to apply certain public procurement reservations.
