Interior Minister Maria Golubeva presented a corresponding proposal to the government for its consideration.

If the Cabinet of Ministers decides to declare a state of emergency, it will be introduced in the Augšdaugava and Kraslava regions, and the powers of the State Border Guard Service will be expanded.

The Interior Ministry noted that the Lithuanian government has strengthened the regime of protection of state borders, so that in recent days illegal immigrants from the territory of Belarus are increasingly trying to cross the border between Latvia and Poland.

In the past four days, Latvian border guards have detained 218 people who have entered the country illegally through the border with Belarus.

The State Border Guard Service is working on an improved standby mode to respond to attempts to cross the state border illegally.

In view of the situation in Lithuania, as well as the increasing threats on the border between Latvia and Belarus, the Latvian authorities have strengthened border surveillance with Belarus and mobilized the resources of the State Border Guard Service and the army. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, also provides assistance.
