“It was nothing to us,” Lukashenko told a press conference in Minsk, adding that the death of activist Vitaly Shyshov had strained relations between Minsk and Kiev.
Shishov, 26, was found hanged in a park in Kiev last Tuesday. He headed the non-governmental organization “Belarusian House in Ukraine”, which helps Belarusians to escape repression in their homeland.
The Ukrainian police have launched an investigation into the murder and critics of Lukashenko have blamed his regime for the activist’s death.
“What madman would go and repeat it?” Lukashenko said, adding that “there are enough people without Shyshov to deal with.”
He accused the Ukrainian security services of supporting Shishov and demanded that Kiev “put the facts on the table.”
“Tell us what happened to the Belarusian citizen,” Lukashenko said.
The non-governmental organization “Belarusian House in Ukraine”, headed by V. Shyshov, is involved in various activities, from helping compatriots settle in Ukraine to organizing protests against the Minsk regime.
Lukashenko also denied that Minsk had tried to forcefully return Belarusian athlete Kryscin Cimanouskaya from the Tokyo Olympics when she publicly criticized the Belarusian Athletics Federation.
He claimed that the sprinter was “owned” by Poland, which had granted him a humanitarian visa.
“She wouldn’t have done it herself if she hadn’t been in control,” Lukashenko said.
He added that there was “no” a KGB agent at the Tokyo Olympics.
