Said powers would be granted to the soldiers by the Minister of National Defense upon a motivated request in writing from the President of the Government’s Emergency Commission and in coordination with the President.
Soldiers can be granted special rights for a maximum of three months.
Saulius Skvernelis, leader of the Seimas opposition, criticized the amendments, saying that they would basically allow three people to “introduce a state of war into the country even in peaceful conditions.”
During the extraordinary session, the Seimas will also receive amendments to the laws related to the construction of a physical barrier on the border between Lithuania and Belarus.
This year, more than 4,000 people crossed the border from Belarus into Lithuania. illegal migrants. That number is more than a dozen times higher than it was in 2020.
