The street became a test of patience: two months of unemployed equipment, but without work

Residents of A.Mackevičiaus Street complain about the repair of the street, which has not been completed for the second year in a row. There has been lined machinery here for some time, the road surface has been ripped off, but no workers are seen.

Reminiscent of chaos

Readers of “Kauno diena” told what life is like now on A.Mackevičiaus Street. According to them, the street repairs are being carried out in a chaotic manner, there is no clear work schedule and there is no information on when there will be smooth asphalt around the house again, instead of an area reminiscent of trenches .

“On the section from Turžėnų to Telšių Street, the equipment has been idle for two months, but the works are not continuing. How long can you be like this? If you can’t do the job, you may not have to accept it. The sides are filled with sand, the pipes are left, there is no possibility of crossing. I had to drive on the sidewalks for a month to get out of the house, which resulted in scratched tires. It is good that no one has imposed fines yet, because I have formally violated the Rules of the Road. However, it was not possible to get out any other way, ”said a local resident Marius about the difficult access to the house.

The man pointed out that there is also a traffic chaos in the section from Telšiai to Savanorių Avenue. Previously, there was one-way traffic here, but due to the repair of A.Mackevičiaus Street, two-way traffic was reopened. However, such a decision did not work out. According to Marius from Kaunas, drivers often leave their vehicles in a lane in this section, making it impossible to pass smoothly.

“If people leave cars in one lane, then it is almost impossible to drive in both directions. The machines are crushing, everyone is cursing, you have to wait for some to pass and then try to get out somehow. This section does not work, ”said the local neighbor.

Unforeseen jobs

Aloyzas Pakalniškis, Head of the City Management Division of the Kaunas City Municipality Administration, told Kauno Diena that the repair of the surrounding streets started last year and that the maintenance of A.Mackevičiaus street started in January of this year, it was then temporarily suspended and the barricades returned to this location.

“Kauno vandenys is implementing the EU-funded project“ Reconstruction and development of surface sewage networks in Kaunas ”, which aims to improve the surface sewage system in Kaunas. This project also includes the repair works on A.Mackevičiaus Street. On the most difficult section, between Turžėnų and Telšių streets, the renovation of the networks began in 2021. in January, but the works were suspended due to unfavorable weather conditions for construction. The works were renewed at the beginning of March this year and ended in June ”, said the specialist.

The equipment has been idle for two months, but the work is not continuing.

He explained that during the project, a commitment was made to install new surface sewage collection networks from Šv.Gertrūdos street to Savanorių avenue. According to current data, the nets are laid before the intersection with Šatrijos street.

“The nets are placed at a depth of more than six meters, where there is a high level of groundwater and” floating “sand. In addition, this urbanized area is rich in underground communications, even in the interwar period, which are in a state of emergency. Due to these circumstances, it was not possible to complete the job faster. The contractor’s construction machinery was also unable to function at full capacity, as underground communication accidents were eliminated ”, A. Pakalniškis tried to explain why the repairs on A.Mackevičiaus Street are at a standstill.

According to the Head of the City Management Department, the speed of the works is also limited by heavy traffic on A.Mackevičiaus Street, which cannot be completely closed due to the reconstruction of other streets currently underway in Kaunas, such as the reconstruction of the Castle. Ring.

Working conditions

A. Pakalniškis noted that part of the works will be completed by the middle of this month. Others are scheduled for completion in late summer.

“The networks on the section from Šatrijos to Telšių Street (about 140 m) are scheduled to be installed in 2021. The rest of the sidewalks on A.Mackevičiaus Street will be completely restored and the documentation will be arranged before August 31” , – the head of the City Management Department indicated the end of the work deadlines.

Traffic flows

Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Transport and Traffic Organization Division of the Kaunas City Municipal Administration, also spoke about the traffic on the stretch from Telšių Street to Savanorių Avenue. According to the specialist, residents should understand that the work in progress can cause some problems, so ask for patience.

“At the moment, no traffic changes will be implemented on Savanorių avenue, at the intersection of Telšių and A. Mickevičiaus streets. We understand this makes getting to the desired location a bit difficult, but there is very little to wait for the job to be completed. We ask drivers to have a little more patience and, in case of greater intensity of the crossing, to choose alternative routes ”, suggested the traffic specialist.
