Jore, a fourth-year student studying publishing and advertising at Vilnius University, tells news portal tv3.lt that her job search was difficult and tedious for her.
According to her, the employers she hires do not go by profession, they only offer internships, so she has chosen a job that does not require a degree.
“I tried (by specialty – aut. last.) find various jobs. One at the Council of Youth Organizations, where they were invited for an interview (employers – aut. last.) in charge of performing a creative task. I was not accepted there, even though I knew who was leading those teams.
In the second test, I did an internship in an insurance company, marketing department, for three months. Right after that they didn’t offer me a job because I understand they need more experienced and trained staff. I finished my internship in March, but so far no one has sent me a recommendation letter.
And finally I went to the service sector, because it is known that these sectors are always looking for people ”, the girl shares.
Three times more student offers
According to data from the Employment Service, in June this year, 1.1 thousand. job vacancies, almost three times more than in the same period of 2020, when 400 vacancies were registered.
Rita Karavaitienė, Marketing Director for the online CV job posting portal, says this trend is also noticeable. According to her, it would be difficult to find an area where there is no shortage of workers at this time. This is a consequence of the pandemic, which has disrupted the job market.
“There is a record number of job offers, starting in January, during which their growth began to grow rapidly.
Even in July, not during the pandemic, there was a ‘silence’: neither the employees nor the employers were looking for work, but we currently have a lot of job offers in July, “says R. Karavaitienė.
As the specialists of the Employment Service comment, employers, when registering vacancies in the information system of the Employment Service, can indicate that they will employ a student (or pupil) for the job offered.
“However, young people can apply for all advertised jobs if they meet the requirements for the position,” say specialists.
The most popular areas do not change
Wholesale and retail trade companies register the highest number of job offers for students in the Employment Service: 27 percent. (292 vacancies). Employers that developed lodging and catering services presented 189 vacancies and manufacturing companies presented 106 vacancies.
According to the Employment Service, young people are usually offered auxiliary workers (€ 770), salespeople (€ 740), waiters (€ 1,040), car drivers (€ 860), cooks (€ 890), dishwashers (€ 760) ), and strawberry workers (€ 840), fast food staff (€ 730).
“Year after year they are some of the most popular areas, regardless of the season. We would distinguish between trade, customer service, clothing in stock, production and it is clear what depends on the season: catering, tourism, hotel sector.
These areas are the most popular with students. They are often chosen because companies provide opportunities to combine work with study. In commerce, people choose jobs that offer part-time, afternoon or only weekend work, ”says R. Karavaitienė.
Most of the offers, in the main cities
The highest concentrations in the labor market are found in large cities. According to the CV online marketing director, there are more varied options that can be offered to the student.
“If it’s about seasonality, then the geography changes a bit and for seasonal work students often choose resorts, where the work shifts to the catering, tourism and agriculture sectors. Again, it depends on seasonality. But, in general, it is easier to find work in the big cities, “he says.
According to representatives of the Employment Service and R. Karavaitienė, specialists in information technology, advertising and marketing, tourism directors, administrators and companies employ law students as junior lawyers.
“The need for IT work has been high for many years. The need for financial professionals is extremely high, especially for those who speak at least English. Perhaps it is calmer in the field of culture, in the field of law, where there weren’t many job openings before the pandemic.
Employers don’t lower the requirements, they stay high, they want the best ideal candidate to meet the set of requirements. Some companies understand that situation, so they started to take into account the needs of the employees when they saw the situation where it was difficult to attract new employees, ”says R. Karavaitienė.
According to data from the Employment Service, on July 1. Among all registered clients there were 11.2 thousand. people who study – 7.8 thousand. less than a month ago. The decrease in the number of students is influenced by the fact that June 30. graduates are no longer students and some students have found employment.
