“You have all heard of the mystical lightning ball. Unfortunately, no one has been able to capture it. However, there are far more mystical lightning bolts than you could have imagined! Throughout the century, airplane pilots reported seeing strange formations of light on storms, as if ghosts traveled up into the sky. However, no scientist believed them until those ghosts were accidentally captured 30 years ago, “said Tadas Janušonis, who captured an impressive natural phenomenon.
According to the photographer, this phenomenon is called “sprites” in English, and in Lithuanian it means like spirits or masks.
Scientists have been very interested in these phenomena, but the phenomenon is not yet fully understood, but there is no doubt that it is lightning.
Although the science of the formation of flowing lightning is still being elucidated, it is known to be a type of lightning that connects a storm that rages along the Earth’s surface with the higher layers of the atmosphere.
Thus, there are various types of lightning strikes in addition to ordinary lightning, but also orange sprites, as well as blue jets.
Researchers are still figuring out how those rays strike. The flowing lightning is expected to balance the distribution of electrical charge in the atmosphere during storms, dumping excess charge into the ionosphere, the upper part of the atmosphere rich in energy-containing particles, writes nbcnews.com.

Earlier this year, blue streams in the stratosphere were also captured by special teams from the International Space Station, reports space.com.
“It is literally cosmic lightning because it does not shoot down, but above the storm. It stretches for 50 km and can reach a height of up to 100 km.
Catching a mask is the same as winning the main prize in the search for natural phenomena. This is extremely difficult to do! You must have super light sensitive equipment or be very good at using the camera. However, the most difficult thing is to get the right conditions! In the distance, at least 100 km away, a very intense mesocyclone storm should boil with the most powerful lightning discharges to the ground, and should be light and maximally dark overhead.
Even the right conditions do not guarantee that there are masks, so I caught them for the second time in just two years!

The quality is tragic because I captured them while shooting with a very light sensitive camera. They were invisible to the naked eye because the nights are still too bright for them and the masks were 400-500 km away in Warsaw! Even after filming, I was not noticed by me, but by my colleague Lukas, who reviewed the material!
There is a lot of joy, because these are the most impressive cosmic spirits that we have captured so far! ”- enjoyed Tadas Janušonis, a multi-body observer and member of the Sky Chasers LT team.
