Of the 137 foreigners caught last day, 106 had Iraqi documents or presented themselves as Iraqi citizens.
All those detained on Thursday will be screened for COVID-19 and isolated until results are available. The circumstances of the events are being clarified, investigations are being carried out. Asylum seekers have been notified by the Department of Migration, which processes such applications.
Until late Thursday, 380 illegal immigrants housed in the SBGS that operates on the border with Belarus were deported. They have been moved to a new location: a tent town located in the training ground of the Public Security Service in Rūdninkai, Šalčininkai district.
Currently, these foreigners are housed in the SBGS units: in the Alien Registration Center in Pabradė, in the dormitories of the Border Guard School in Medininkai (Vilnius district), in the border dams operating on the border with Belarus and on the territory of Švendubrė a river border checkpoint in the municipality of Druskininkai.
The migrants, in addition to the Rūdninkai camp, are also housed in facilities provided by the city and district municipalities of Alytus, Ignalina, Lazdijai, Varėna and Šalčininkai.
This year, 3,282 illegal immigrants tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus until midnight from Thursday to Friday. That number is more than 40 times higher than it was in 2020. Last year, 81 of those foreigners were detained across the border from Lithuania. 2019 46 illegal immigrants were caught by border guards in 2018; – 104, 2017 – 72.
This July, border guards detained 2,621 migrants. There were 473 in June, 77 in May, 70 in April, and 8 in March.
Among the people detained on the border with Belarus this year are mostly Iraqi citizens or foreigners who have come forward: 2,111. Also detained are 191 Congolese, 129 Cameroonians, 89 Russians and Syrians, 85 Iranians, 79 Guineans and Afghans, and other citizens.
Since the beginning of the year, according to preliminary data, most of the migrants have been detained in Varėna district: 722. 721 foreigners illegally arrived from Belarus were captured in Šalčininkai district, 683 in Druskininkai municipality, 452 in Ignalina, 339 in Švenčionys, 176 in Lazdijai, 154 in Vilnius, 35 in Zarasai.
A large part of the detainees seek to enter Western European countries through Lithuania.
With a significant increase in the number of such cases, SBGS has strengthened border security with Belarus. In addition to various organizational measures, officials from other SBGS units were assigned to this section and additional technical resources were assigned. In addition, the border guards were assisted by forces from other Lithuanian institutions, including the army, as well as officials from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency FRONTEX and Estonia.
