The head of government initially suggested to everyone that it should be clear that the special release of migrants across the border between Belarus and Lithuania is not just a bilateral issue between Lithuania and Belarus, but a reaction to the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Ryanair.
“This is a reaction to the decisions taken by the European Union, unanimously and after the hijacking of a plane flying from Athens to Vilnius. The sanctions, which were imposed by agreement of the heads of state of the European Union of all the states of the European Union, are the basis after which the usual activities of the Belarusian border services changed and the border was largely stopped. from the other. side, ”I. Šimonyt said after after the meeting.
This means that, from the government’s point of view, Lithuania cannot resolve the migration crisis bilaterally.
“This is also a problem for the European Union,” said the prime minister, adding that both the cabinet of ministers and President G. Nausėda are working in that direction.
According to I. Šimonytė, European countries understand that the objective of migrants is not only Lithuania, because a large part of the people are willing to travel further afield, to other countries of the European Union.
He said that work was being done at the same time with the countries where most of the migrants came from, but after saying that, the prime minister suggested not having high hopes that the process will take place anytime soon. In this case, the first thing to think about is Iraq, from where many migrants show up. According to the Prime Minister, this week a mission from Iraqi institutions is working in Lithuania.
“I would like the expectations on those issues to be well calibrated, these are not the issues that are resolved very quickly and easily. It is not the case that all arriving Iraqi officials take several hundred people with them, because people need to be identified, there is intense work going on. But the very response to the invitation to stand up and know the situation specifically in the places where people are detained can be evaluated as a positive sign, what the results will be, we will see in the near future ”, says I. Šimonytė.
The head of government also listed what Lithuania itself would do. According to her, the leaders of all political parties agreed that Lithuania should ensure physical protection of the borders as soon as possible. I. Šimonytė says the government has a plan on how to do it. She said the plan will be released soon.
Another important issue is the accommodation of migrants. In this sense, he suggested not to discuss what and what has not been done so far, but to take the job now. Among other things, the Prime Minister thanked political opponents, who provide not only criticism but also advice. Of all those who thanked, he highlighted Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, the president of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party.
“But it must be understood at the same time if at least my request to the leaders was such that it would not become an inspiration for fruitless discussions. I really understand the mayors who have to find solutions to help the Government, I thank them as well as the other institutions (the Government is willing to share costs and contribute to solving problems in all ways, rewarding the support to the decisions), but I would like that discussion in all practicalities and it would be limited, “said I. Šimonytė.
According to the Prime Minister, in this case we are talking about specific people who cannot disappear because they are already in Lithuania. This means that migrants must be safely housed for both themselves and the Lithuanian population, but they can no longer be at the border barriers, because in this way the border guards become caretakers of migrants and cannot work directly.
At the same time, according to the prime minister, police officers must do their job directly and not quell uncivilized protests. I. Šimonytė offered to protest in a civilized manner, including to the government.
