During the unannounced visit, the president met with local residents and says he heard their position before a meeting with political party leaders scheduled for Thursday.

“Meeting in Dieveniškės. Tomorrow, we will speak with party leaders about a common position and solutions to the migration crisis. This is not a problem for a government, several municipalities or several local communities. This is a problem for the whole of Lithuania, which we can only solve successfully together.

Therefore, before tomorrow’s meeting, I met with the residents of Dieveniškės. “So that I can listen to your concerns,” the president wrote on his Facebook account.

Raminta Stanaitytė-Česnulienė, the president’s chief communication advisor, informed BNS that the meeting had not been announced in advance because people not related to the community would not receive unnecessary attention.

“Before tomorrow’s meeting, the president wanted to hear what the people of Dieveniškės are concerned about and listen to. They did not announce in advance so as not to attract unnecessary attention and people outside the community,” said the councilor.

“The meeting was attended by the mayor, the elder and members of the Dieveniškės community. His main complaint was uncoordinated action, concern for human security. The president asked community members to understand the difficult situation in the country and to continue the dialogue constructively, “he added.

The Interior Ministry had previously planned to host several hundred migrants for the first of September at the former Dieveniškės technical school.

However, the residents of Dieveniškės, who are organizing protests, say they are opposed to the accommodation of migrants on the city’s territory, as the place where the migrants are planned to be accommodated is a couple of dozen meters from the school operational.

Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė said on Wednesday that there are no plans to transport migrants to Dieveniškės at this time, but the city’s technical school is considered a reserved place to accommodate foreigners.

More than 3,000 people have already tried to enter Lithuania this year. illegal immigrants, Lithuania has declared an emergency situation due to its influx. The country’s officials take the position that the increase in migratory flows is an organized action of the Minsk regime against Lithuania.
