This is the highest number of illegal immigrants detained per day this year, the number of those foreigners has already exceeded 3,000.
Until then, most of the migrants were trapped within Druskininkai municipality, but after Tuesday’s arrests, Šalčininkai district became such a place. Of the 171 migrants detained Tuesday, all presented themselves as Iraqi citizens or had Iraqi documents.
The detained aliens will be tested for COVID-19 and isolated until the results are available.
This year, 3,027 illegal immigrants tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus until midnight Tuesday to Wednesday. In July alone, 2,366 migrants were detained, in June 473, in May 77, in April 70 and on March 8.
Among those detained on the border with Belarus this year are mostly Iraqi citizens or foreigners who came forward: 1,910. Also detained are 191 Congolese, 129 Cameroonians, 83 Russians, 81 Iranians, 78 Guineans, 77 Afghans and Syrians and other citizens.
Since the beginning of the year, according to preliminary data, most of the migrants were detained in the Šalčininkai district – 678. Within the limits of the Druskininkai municipality, 655 foreigners who entered Belarus illegally, Varėna – 602, Ignalina – 437, Švenčionys – 302, Lazdijai – 176.
A large part of the detainees seek to enter Western European countries through Lithuania.
Lithuania has faced a significant increase in illegal immigration in recent months, and Lithuania has declared an emergency situation due to its influx. The country’s officials take the position that the increase in migratory flows is an organized action of the Minsk regime against Lithuania.
