A large group of people, tables full of candies and bottles of water, several tents, a stage made on the stairs of the building and the artist Romas Dambrauskas performing there, looked like a protest campaign that was taking place in Dieveniškės on Tuesday for the night against plans to accommodate 500 migrants in the city.
“In Dieveniškės we are united, therefore powerful”, “Why is the Lithuanian border not protected?”, Dieveniškės, a force!
The rallies themselves were peaceful, standing and listening to the concert sitting on folding chairs. The peaceful protest was also signaled by the fact that there were no police teams in it.
The angry exclamations were provoked only by R. Dambrauskas’ fierce speech before the performance, which was directed against the decisions of the current government.
President Gitanas Nausėda was also criticized. The interpreter asked the audience where the head of the country had disappeared.
“Where is our president? If he doesn’t go with us, maybe we will go to him? But not with a request for grace or gratitude for lifting a finger, but with a demand to stand firm and defend the constitutional rights of the people, ”said R. Dambrauskas.
When asked where our president, the people gathered, repeated several times, “No!”
Parliamentarians Petras Gražulis, Rita Tamašunienė, Beata Petkevič, as well as Antanas Kandrotas, one of the organizers of the Family March, also appeared at the protest.
Both P. Gražulis and R. Dambrauskas had already appeared at noon in another Šalčininkai district, Rūdninkai, in a protest against the settlement of migrants in the territory.
A few days ago, the residents of Dievenišk entregars handed over 2,000 signatures to the government, demanding that the migrants not be accommodated in the city.
It is true that both neighbors of the town do not even exist.
On Saturday, dioceses and government officials did not reach an agreement on housing the migrants on campus.
According to the authorities, only families with children who did not have adequate conditions at the barriers would be brought to Dieveniškės in September.
