Market traders are modest, difficult to understand, and unwilling to allow their products to be photographed. They say everyone here knows each other, so they really don’t want to speak out loud or make a poster. However, I am fortunate to speak to some women who trade in the market on a very hot day, at +28 degrees Celsius.
“The market has deteriorated, there are few buyers and traders left.” And how long there were people! Now, not even a third. In the past, many locals visited, there were many young people, and people came from the surrounding villages; now they are gone, they all emigrated … But, as you can see, everyone keeps coming, buying something, “said a woman who traded in the same market in Biržai for two decades. .
And in fact, when you arrive at the Biržai central market on Thursday, you will be greeted by a sad sight: in one part of the market, where most of the new products are sold and which seems to resemble the capital’s Gariūnai market, there are many merchants and few buyers.
The second-hand clothing market behind the fence is no better either: In a large area that can accommodate nearly a hundred tents, there are only a few dozen of them. Who sells second-hand items, who: used and new clothes at affordable prices.
“We have not caused prices, we are doing it in a way that is good for us and for the people.” People with less money can come and shop for a full 10 euros. Go shake, and pants and socks to buy, and after the euro good clothes were hooked. I say this: only lazy people walk here without clothes, “said the merchant.

The product range here ranged from popular fast fashion brands like Vero Moda or Jack & Jones to the most luxurious Ralph Lauren. For example, a long dress from this fashion brand can be purchased for just over 10 euros. These collections, although old, would cost at least one hundred euros in the store.
Next to the store: a hanger separated by 1 Eur. And while you may think that scarves are among the cheapest items, you can find very good quality cotton shirts, long sleeve blouses and even jeans.
And who would give you a good product in euros? The market merchant says that if the products hang for one week, the next, and they don’t move into a new house, they are discounted and sold by half a cart to take up space.
And space is needed, because the clothing retailer buys every two weeks. The scheme here is simple: there is a fundraiser in the first week; You must collect the money that will be used to pay for a new shipment of goods. The second week is dedicated to earnings. Yes, it is, and it circles.
“People everywhere buy differently. They buy some clothes in Anykščiai, others in Biržai and others in Kėdainiai. What do people in Biržai buy? Shorts, maikes, there are women who come in the morning to look for dresses. Especially buy bigger clothes, “said the merchant.
Is it possible to find expensive goods on the market? Really, for example, one of the most expensive products on the market is leather, which can cost a hundred European money. And in the warm season they can be bought at the best prices, because it is not for nothing that popular wisdom shows that sledges should be prepared in the summer.
The highest prices on the market start in the fall, then we sell jackets. And in summer there are dresses: you can buy them for 50 euros and 50 cents, only the dress is not the same as the dress, ”said the market merchant.
The woman who trades in both Biržai and Anykščiai says she has regular clients. Those who no longer bother to look for and measure the products by themselves, come to the market and say: “put the bag on and I’m going to look.” It is useful, because, to know the wishes and needs of the buyers, what you put in the bag will probably still fit and please. And the bag vendor says he carries not one, but several.
When asked how he survived the quarantine period, the merchant shrugged: People returned when conditions improved, went shopping at the market, did not search for stores because they no longer have that much money. And merchants were not anointed with butter, after all, they had to spend the entire season at home, not at the market. Still, most operations are done during the warm season, so everything you earn will be the same for the rest of the year.
And why are we going to eat? You want to eat. If you don’t make money yourself, who will give us that money? The merchant laughed.
As we walk through the market, we meet another well-meaning merchant who is determined to show the clothes he sells and tell us how he is doing in the market. Learning that we came to Vilnius from Biržai just for the market, he laughed.
“So why were you driving here? It was necessary to go to Ukmergė or Anykščiai “, – the merchant laughed and suggested that Biržai Marketplace is a quiet day on a weekday, it is better to visit on Saturday when there are more people around. And it is best to go to the markets of other cities , That’s where the real action takes place!
In the market, the first line of Etam lingerie with labels attracts the attention of buyers. Bras – 12 euros each, nightwear – from 6 to 15 euros. In the store, you would have to pay four times more for that product.
“You know, someone in the store measures what kind of thread hangs or stains the dust; after that, those products can no longer be sold, we buy and sell cheaper,” said the merchant, realizing clearly that he was selling a well-known brand.
The days when merchants didn’t even realize what they were selling are long gone. Many of them now know very well what is “best” on the market.
