The pollutant spot was recorded by Klaipėda residents in the Curonian Lagoon, where rainwater flows through them in pipes.

“Some kind of even fractions pollutant as hard as if it were going to clean a sewer pipe, it’s so ugly. And the smell is cruel. We stood for an hour, watched and cried for our ecology, ”says Mikhail Andrijanov from Klaipeda.

So Klaipeda residents rushed to call the police, dock workers, environmentalists and plumbers. These clog the pipes when they arrive and pump the remaining pollutants into the sewer networks to this day.

Environmentalists also undertook the investigation, who soon discovered that pollutants had entered the sewage system and from there entered the Curlandia Lagoon from the Grigeo Klaipėda company, whose activities are still being investigated by prosecutors due to possible contamination of the Lagoon. Curonian for several years.

“There has been an incident at the Grigeo Klaipėda joint-stock company, which is currently being investigated, that industrial wastewater has been discharged into surface sewage networks. The damage to the environment will be calculated when we receive all the necessary information and collect what we know, ”says Laura Dagilienė, Environmental Director at Klaipėda.

Upon learning that pollutants from Grigeo Klaipeda were flowing back into the Curonian Lagoon, residents of the port city make no secret of their outrage.

“There are no words that it works that way,” says the resident.

“Nonsense. Both have already received fines and still allow it. Well, nonsense. It must be closed completely,” says another.

“They need to work more responsibly. The manager needs to observe more of his employees, subordinates, why this happens. It seems to me that it depends on the manager,” the resident says.

The director of Grigeo Klaipeda is on vacation, but company representatives admit that the pollutants in the lagoon actually came from their company. It says there was a glitch that was quickly corrected.

“Due to the failure of the automatic gate, the maintenance of the working level of the technological circulating water basin has failed. And this meant that when the water level in the pool rose, the water flowed through the overflow pipe for that purpose, and from the overflow pipe channel through the leaking rainwater pipe into the rainwater drainage pipe ”, says Paulius Sereikis, Technical Director of Grigeo Klaipėda. .

The company representatives also ensure that these pollutants must not harm nature.

“There are no very important chemicals there. Such a biodegradable mass. Circulating water. There will be no miracle,” says P. Sereikis.

It is true that after a while the pollutants flowed back into the lagoon. Specialists believe that the pollutants left in the networks between the traffic jam and the Curonian Lagoon flow here. Still, the environment minister is calling Grigeo executives on the carpet Monday over the incident. Not only that, Grigeo Klaipeda has already discussed the available technologies with the highest specialists in environmental protection in the European Union.

“Right now I am in Ljubljana, I spoke with the heads of the European Union Environment Agency, who will appoint the best specific European experts so that we can clearly discover the best production technologies in the paper industry and there will be no evasion. The company continues to live on the surface, the manifestos resolve its image and I do not see significant changes ”, says the Minister of the Environment Simonas Gentvilas.

And prosecutors say they will soon announce the end of the pre-trial investigation, in which Grigeo Klaipėda became famous a year and a half ago due to possible deliberate contamination in the Curonian Lagoon over several years. There are currently 15 suspects: 14 natural and 1 legal. All of the suspects are current and former employees of the company. There have been complaints of violations of environmental regulations, falsification and abuse of documents. The claim for material damage to nature amounts to more than 48 million euros.
