Researchers at Yale University decided to try to stimulate the formation of neural connections lost due to constant stress with psilocybin. Previous tests have shown that the combination of psilocybin with ketamine alleviates the symptoms of depression.
In a new phase of preclinical experiments, they injected a single dose of psilocybin dose into mice and looked at how it affects brain function.
Already on the first day, the researchers recorded an increase in the number and size of the neuronal outgrowth, which ensures the exchange of information between neurons: the dendrites. New neural connections have increased and their quality has improved by 10%.
Rodent behavior also improved and increased neurotransmitter activity was recorded. The effect was long-lasting: the changes persisted throughout the month of animal observation.
“It was amazing to see such changes after just one dose of psilocybin. The brain can use these structural changes to store new experiences, ”commented Alex Kwan, author of the article.
The findings confirm many previous psilocybin clinical trials. Recently, British researchers showed once again that it handles antidepressants better in a severe form of depression. According to them, the results obtained should lead to the authorization of the use of these substances in clinical practice.
