Šimonytė: changes can be expected in the near future, part of the tests will have to be paid for out of pocket

“I think the time will come in the near future when at least voluntary tests (that is, tests that are needed, for example, when traveling or going to events or living in some other way, not those that are they require at work) too cheap vaccine alternative. I will tell the state, very brilliantly, that it costs taxpayers more than to vaccinate a person, “I. Šimonytė told reporters in Kaunas.

The head of government said that both she and her colleagues abroad are trying to persuade the public to get vaccinated right now.

“People looking forward to fall should understand: it takes a month and a half for immunity to develop.” That month and a half may come at a much riskier time than now. Vaccination is now relatively safe because immunity does not develop immediately; in the case of a two-dose vaccine, additional time is required between doses. Those who get vaccinated today could be calm and safe on September 1. I urge you to do it again, ”said I. Šimonytė.

The prime minister says that people who “make the right decisions protect themselves and the public who choose to be vaccinated should not suffer because someone has their own opinion about vaccines.”

“I am not referring to medical situations where vaccination is not possible for some reason, <…> But in cases where people simply choose not to do something and have cheaper alternatives, like taking a taxpayer money test, that of course the entire incentive system should change. If there was such a need, we would first talk about expanding the use of the passport of opportunity and not offering free trials as an option, ”said I. Šimonytė.

Šimašius offers not to test the unvaccinated for public money

The mayor of Vilnius, Remigijus Šimašius, proposes not to test those who have not been vaccinated with state money. This proposal applies to those who wish to travel and for whom, by decision of the Government, tests are mandatory in order to work.

“First, [siūlau] Stop subsidizing irresponsibility. I can say: a couple of weeks ago it was decided to give the green light to those who want to travel abroad, and not only to those who have been vaccinated, but also to those who have been tested. It was decided that even in this case, the test would be free, which would otherwise cost (and cost taxpayers) € 70. Therefore, we immediately received an increase in the number of people testing from one hundred to eight hundred during the day, ”said R. Šimašius.

The mayor assumes that some five hundred more people would have been vaccinated if there had not been irresponsibility of such financing.

“I invite you to cancel it,” said R. Šimašius.

The mayor welcomed the expansion of the list of professions whose representatives must test.

“But here a couple of things are needed: first, total clarity about what will happen in the fall, when the situation is likely to become more threatening. So the question is whether we are inclined to have our children go to kindergartens. and schools where staff are not necessarily vaccinated. <…)>. Obviously, we want children to be taught safely, to be provided services. They have to be provided by vaccinated people or after a test, but it really is not necessary to do it for taxpayers’ money, ”said R. Šimašius.

According to the mayor, this costs taxpayers almost ten times more, and the measure is much less effective in fighting a pandemic.
