The situation is especially critical in the elderly in the Panevėžys district, where the water comes from the old wells of local collective farms. Although considered technical, unsuitable for consumption and cooking, the locals boldly use it for everything. And most importantly, it’s free, so it’s rare for anyone to save on this natural asset.
The passion for water is also boiling in the Pashtry, which has a population of seven hundred. Paistris elder Virginijus Šležas made no secret that some residents’ water taps were closed day and night, so for others it was not enough.
“The pumps are working at full capacity, exceeding their capacity, but it is barely reaching some houses. During the day, it is often not possible to take a bath or turn on the washing machine, ”said the old man from Paistris.
He himself has tried to talk to the villagers to use the water only for basic needs, but to no avail. According to V. Šležas, until such an understanding is reached, the situation will hardly change.
“People are not kind or understanding of each other. The water is free in the village, so no one saves it. He drops the gut in the potato furrow and forgets. After all, otherwise, the potatoes They will be small and it does not matter at all that the neighbor, coming home from work, has nowhere to shower, ”said V. Šležas angrily.
Take drastic measures
Realizing that morale and petitions alone would not be enough, the old man adopted a different tactic. Now change the water completely in some streets for half a day.
The pressure is then normalized for the rest of the settlement. The elder is considering using such tactics on a continuous schedule to continue.
“Those who were turned off did not hide their indignation, they even tried to arbitrarily jump into the wells and turn off the taps. But others rejoiced at the reappearance of the water. It may be better to hold on than to have such pressure that the tap water hardly drips from morning to night. A meeting of rural residents will be called, they will be able to spill out and perhaps offer better solutions to the problem, ”said V. Šležas.
According to him, currently the patriots consume about 250 cubic meters per day. m of water per day. In the cold season, statistically per capita consumes 2-3 cubic meters per month. m of water, and in this extremely hot July, according to the old man, this figure rose to 10 cubic feet. subway. As V. Šležas jokes, previously only the chairman of the collective farm and his secretary had the pools, and now, almost one out of every three yards.
“People want to have swimming pools and green lawns. After all, children from London will come, just like a reddened meadow! There is still a great lack of awareness. If we all used that water in a friendly way, it would be enough for everyone. Here Like the traffic in Georgia, whose car is bigger, that’s the priority, and the traffic light doesn’t matter ”, compared V. Šležas.
See even spells
According to the old man, some neighbors, who have lost their patience, even offer to gather a group of people to walk through the patios and check where the water is taken from the irrigation of the gardens, from where the pond is miraculously filled during that weather. hot. V. Šležas does not claim that so far the only hope is to ask for heaven’s grace. The cloud that passed over Paistris on Tuesday night dropped a considerable portion of rain, so at least for a time people can get back to enjoying the water in their homes.
“It just came to our notice then. Men even started hunting frogs and prodding women with dresses just to make it rain. Popular wisdom says it helps. And we still believe in older people. All for the common good”, – As always, V. Šležas analyzes problems with humor.
The aggravated elderly man adds that the same situation occurs practically every hot summer, because in Paistry the engineering networks are old and often perishable. But a new well is already being prepared and there will be new networks.
“Perhaps when there are meters, residents will release water more responsibly. Although I have heard that there are those who pay a hundred euros a month for water just to have a green meadow and a swimming pool in the courtyard,” said V. Šležas.
Natural resources are not infinite
Even rotating water meters are no longer a scare in such a hot summer. Valerijus Baranovskis, deputy director of the district municipality Velžio utility company, which serves most of the settlements in the Panevėžys district, stated that drinking water consumption increased 3-4 times in July compared to June, when the nature rained generously. The consumption of drinking water increases and is the reason why it begins to lack.
“Due to increased demand, we cannot supply water, so the pressure is dropping. People who live at the end of the water supply route cannot shower, and they also have to wait a long time for it to be added. water to the pot, “said the deputy.
According to him, the population is approached through various channels and asked to use clean water in moderation, for cooking, washing and other household needs, not for watering the gardens.
Utility workers are faced with a situation where, in the event of a water supply interruption, residents leave the taps closed, and when it starts supplying, the water runs through the night, digs the garden and thus Therefore, it depletes large quantities.
“If the water supplied through the same pipe is used both to water gardens and to fill large pools, it is no longer possible to guarantee the required pressure. We need to adapt to natural conditions and appreciate that natural resources are not infinite and that there must be enough water for everyone’s basic needs.
We do not live in the desert, so Lithuanians do not value drinking water very much, ”says V. Baranovskis.
Only the rain would help
According to V. Baranovskis, the water supply infrastructure serving the district has been calculated in such a way that it meets all needs and has certain reserves. But probably a few decades ago, no one would have thought that those needs could grow that way, making standard diameter pipes no longer suitable. Although the replacement of old pipes is laid with a larger diameter, the systems are constantly being cleaned, but this is not enough. Because the largest pools are located in many patios, the drinking water is used for ponds and agricultural work.
“If everyone used similar amounts of water, it would be enough. But many think: oh, as soon as it flows, I will throw a water hose into the garden, maybe you will run during the night. Some potatoes are drowning and the neighbors have hardly any water to cook the soup. The system was designed for standard use with some stocks, but it turns out that stocks are too low, “said the deputy.
According to him, it is also influenced by the fact that in recent years more and more people are connecting to the centralized supply water systems in the area, because even those wells dry out during such extreme heat. Furthermore, illegal access to systems remains common and violators are difficult to identify. There are still many old buildings in rural areas, where the water supply has not been cut off since the days of the collective farm, and the possibilities of entering a private farm are very limited. According to V. Baranovskis, changes in pressure reveal the existence of such illegal connections.
“It is unfortunate that our requests for water efficiency have been slow to respond. We hope that at least heaven will hear them; if you touch it, at least the gardens will not be watered with drinking water,” says the representative of the company Velžis.
Citizens are more frugal
The consumption of drinking water has also increased in Panevėžys, but the capacity of the company serving the town Aukštaitijos vandenys has not yet been exceeded. According to the company’s public relations specialist, Svajūnas Mikeška, in the territory served by Aukštaitijos vandenų, the average daily consumption is between 15 and 16 thousand. puppy. m of water, but on such hot summer days the consumption increases to 18-20 thousand. puppy. subway.
“On July 12 we reached a kind of record: 24,360 cubic meters. M of water. Our maximum capacity is 36 thousand.” Not yet achieved, “said S. Mikeška.
