– Tell us, what are you doing now?
– I am currently the director of educational assistance at Šakiai, I work as a speech therapist, and together with my family we created the page lavina.lt, where we share my tasks with parents and teachers, so that, as I say, in Lithuania as many intelligent children as possible grow up .
– Do you actively contribute to the education and training of children?
– Really so. I have a lot of knowledge and experience, I don’t want to use it alone. The original idea of my website was to create as many activities as possible so that parents could spend as much time as possible with their children. But I was surprised that professionals, educators, and speech therapists used the same tasks. It was a great discovery and recognition.
– What knowledge do parents usually lack?
– They usually need specific knowledge for their child. The Internet is very big garbage, a lot of information, but if it is suitable for a particular child, no non-specialist can say it too hard for him. Suppose how to educate, how to treat a child who has attention deficit disorder. No article will say that. Also on certain problems of speech therapy: how to pronounce words, how to develop vocabulary. The specialist sees which is the lowest step on which the child is standing and what must be done to get him up.
– How interested are you in this area?
– My first specialty is the geography teacher. When I studied at Vilnius Pedagogical University, nothing was heard about special educational needs and the number of children with special needs increased. I was faced with the problem that I could not educate them, I did not know how to teach them in geography lessons, I did not understand whose problem was: mine or a child. I decided that I needed to improve my knowledge in order to help those children. I joined Šiauliai, although I did not plan to work as a speech therapist or teacher of children with special needs, I just wanted to help the children in geography lessons, because I really enjoyed that job. But then life changed so much that I first combined the work of a geography teacher and a special educator, and then I started working alone as a speech therapist. I will continue this activity until now
– Is this your true path?
– Really so. Sometimes I even think that if I have to change jobs, I cannot imagine myself without pedagogical activities. I am a teacher, I need children, I need pedagogical work, I am happy with that. In addition, I enjoy sharing my experiences, conducting seminars, training parents and professionals. I want parents and teachers to get to know their children, understand what they find difficult, and not blame me that there are parenting problems here or that I am not doing something like that.
– Do you often notice that educators and parents have different opinions about the same child?
– Yes, it is natural that we see everyone differently, but most of the time those different views and disagreements are due to ignorance, to non-expression. When there is communication about how to improve a child, eventually a common point of contact is found and the same path and direction is followed. I understand the teachers. Children are changing, generations are changing. But everything is possible. Consensus between parents and educators is possible, but both parties must speak.
– The children of today and the children of 20-30 years ago are different, what are these differences?
– Cardinally different. Modern children are brave. They want to take everything with a lot here and now. Put as little effort as possible and get everything you can.
– Is good or bad?
– Our generation was ours, his generation was theirs. I enjoy watching those brave kids say “you” to an adult. They will accomplish much more than us. They accumulate more information, they understand technology faster. Their brains work differently. We need to rejoice in what we have now. The children teach me that value, in the future, to save the lowest possible cost but obtain the best possible results.
– What advice would you give parents?
– My very common advice at this time is that parents calm down within themselves, do not feel tension as it is transmitted to the child so that they believe in their child, his powers, especially when he sees that there are problems to support him, Go to the right specialist. For a young child, with the right help, the results are very good. So believe your child, his success and for sure everything will be fine.
– And the teachers?
– To rest. Enjoy the summer, forget about work, even if it is very hard, return to your work in September with a lot of energy, faith, a positive attitude and a smile.
